I suppose it's all too late now, and I don't know much about Radiation, but this seems a little worrying to me.

Anyone out there that is more clued up on the subject know if this is something to be concerned about?

Judging by Wikipedia at that rate you'd have to stand on the street for about 241 years to receive a lethal dose (of 4-5Sv). It doesn't sound like anything to panic over.

It looks like the originator of the Dunedin report wants to remain anonymous.

Peter Daley in Brisbane (who was contacted by the Dunedin guy) recently reported high levels in Brisbane. The Australian radiation standards body responded:

http://www.dailymercury.com.au/story/2012/01/14/radiation-cloud-not-harmful-sunshine-coast/

(quoting in part) "Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency senior environmental scientist Marcus Grezechnik said the reading was unusual but not concerning for the Coast. "It is very unlikely to be caused from Fukushima, but more likely to be caused by a weather change or dust," Dr Grezechnik said. "It is not seen as a big increase although it is higher than average. To put everyone's mind at ease, even if you were receiving that dose every hour for a full year you would have less dose than one CAT Scan.""

The lack of a person to contact may make it slightly more difficult for the NZ body to look into the situation, esp if the phenomenon was transient.

These hand held devices have become very common since Fukushima, so it is likely they will bring attention to many things which have not been noticed before.

Personally do I think these two reports are related to the situation in Fukushima? No idea. The official responses so far consider it possible but unlikely.

The earth is currently being slammed with one of the biggest solar storms in a long time, I would expect to see elevated levels of radiation from this, especially closer to the earths ozone hole.
