A friend of mine has purchased an 18kg amplifier from somewhere in auckland and needs to get it sent to chch.

Im hoping someone on here will have a bit of experience after ordering some large tech toys or something.

Whats the best way to do this?
Whats the cheapest way to do this?
Is there anything he should watch out for?

Any info would be much appreciated.

thanks,
Stephen.

Your friend will need to work that out with the person they have purchased the goods from.  Or is it a TM auction and your friend has said they'll organise freight from their end?

It is wise to have this sort of thing sorted out prior to purchase otherwise it can bite you in the butt quite hard!

I just used Mana Transport to bring a whole lot of stuff (TV, cabinet, surround sound system) up from Dunedin.  Was reasonably priced and everything came up undamaged.

To save some money, I had the trader drop of the gear to them in Dunedin, and I picked up from their warehouse out in Papakura.

For heavier/bulkier options i usually recommend a depot to depot delivery.  Get the unit packaged up properly and get a measurement on the size, then ring the freight depots, ie: Mainfreight, and ask for a price to move a box xyz size, weighing 18kg from Auckland depot to Chch depot.

It does mean it has to be dropped off at the depot in Auck, and respectively collected at the other end, but tends to work out better for larger/heavier items.

Edit: Ok, basically the same as nate indicated above.  But ring around to see who has the better price. It's typically not as quick as a courier co (allow a couple of days, maybe 3+ between islands), but usually cheaper.

NZ Post may be a reasonable option, too - ParcelPost Tracked allows for shipments for up to 25kg.  Auckland - Christchurch should cost you $41 unless it is particularly bulky as they charge the greater of the actual or the volumetric weight (HxWxL in metres x 200 = volumetric kg).
