I am probably adding more responsiblity onto myself by suggesting this... but for a while now, I have felt that Chch is missing out a decent Mobility user group.

I am of no professional mobility "qualification" but am very enthusiatic with mobile devices, gadgets and technolgy. And seeing Mauricio and other MVPs and Darryl running some UG or a kind of sort, I can't help to think that there must other people aside from me that are into mobile devices and would like to get together to talk and discuss "stuff".

And also, if anyone got any idea or have tips on how to kick-start a UG, please do forward your suggestion here.

Cheers.

Don't mean to hijack your thread, but i'd like to do the same for Dunedin.

So I'm sure we can come up with ideas to get something sorted out!!

Nah, not at all, good to have this topic to see what one (in this case, two) can do to get an UG started.

Did you go to Darryl's UG Tour when he went to Dunedin? I didn't even know he was on tour and asked where I was when he was in Chch... hehe.

p/s: I've ordered my UMPC i7210, and hopefully should be here in early Nov. And had a quick 5-mins feel of JasJam over the weekend, that will be on the list of things to purchase... and not far to follow is a vodem. *nudge nudge wink wink @ Brad*

I tried to set up a small group here in hamilton several years ago.
I managed to attract Nathans attention at the time by some means.
I had one person contact me so I didnt persue it any further.
I still catch up with that person from time to time for coffee etc

First network. Network a lot. Perhaps you should attend some of the already established user groups. The .Net User Group for example.

Hold a formal meeting to create the group and charter. Elect a responsible and someone to help.

Then invite some people to speak. People from other user groups, companies, developers.

Make sure it's always in the same place, date/time. It's good to make it consistent. We found about this.

If it's a Microsoft-focused group, make sure to be listed in the .Net UG pages.

If this is a developer group, join INETA, otherwise join Culminis. Note that to join you will need a certain time in the area and a certain number of members.

Join the O'Reilly user group program for discounts and free technical books (ask me more).

I might be keen, but I guess it depends on what the focus is.

I'd be keen on:
- Ideas/experience swapping
- Giving talks on development experiences + tools
- Discussion on supporting new mobile technologies and devices
- Sharing info on global markets and the differences + problems experienced in the different markets.

Not so keen on:
- .Net (yawn); use it, but there's enough resources on the internet to sink a ship

Eek! Lots of homework to do even just before getting an UG going... I feel like I'm going back to school again...
