Not sure if this has been reported here already...

Chorus wish to inform you of the following Unplanned Network Event

Event:

MSY/S Chorus roadside cabinet – Metcalfe Road Waitakere City, Auckland

Date / Time Start:

5th May 2013

Impact:

Customers who are supported off the MSY/S cabinet will be without service until late next week.

A car has taken out the cabinet from its foundation and a new cabinet is required. Chorus are actively sourcing a new cabinet.

Next Steps:

Technical teams are currently sourcing a new cabinet and will start the rebuild within the next day. We hope to have service restored by this Friday.

I think the best part about the email was

Technical teams are currently sourcing a new cabinet and will start the rebuild within the next day. We hope to have service restored by this Friday.

Good news is that the bus time table laying across the cabinet will be replaced this week also.

I wish someone would take out my one ... TAT/D ... i would happily go without for a week if it meant it was replaced with a nice shiney new one that did half decent speeds, or even VDSL ...

I worked on one in hamilton couple of months back - took 3 days to get it back up and working - working 2 20 hour shifts jointing

I feel for the techs replacing that

i don't think adsl is being upgraded much any more, .. i want vdsl too, seems to be street wiring problem for my location, but you can't really get non-local problems fixed easily unless it completely doesn't work.

even without car crash, i've been hit by cabinet outage before where phone kept working. i wonder how long phone is down in this situation.

ideally dsl could just fail over to going back to exchange..

There isn't any DSL connection for end subscribers at the exchange when they have been cut over to a cabinet. Pretty soon the copper bundle back to the exchange won't be available soon if Chorus have anything to do with it. And Voice & Internet will be provided via the ISAM and the only backhaul will be fibre. There is no way without spending 3-4 more billion dollars to have any redundancy.

Glad there are mobile networks, and really edge elements such as ISAMs can't be made redundant due without spending more money than it's work due to how it works.

aren't the mobile networks fibre backhaul too, so could go out at same time? when i enquired about internet outage it seemed like it was a fibre cut that dropped connectivity.

surely the copper infrastructure is still there so doesn't make sense to rip it out? i can understand not wanting to invest more...

i suppose other way would be if it started happening that cabinets on each side were connected to.

i'm out west so no ufb coming here, but still fibre-fed cabinets. $3 to $4 billion does seem a lot of money to spend on redundancy though. it seems in lots of locations there's way more phone pairs than is necessary down the street, so it could go back to two places.

The cabinet was unfortunately taken out by a 4x4, hence the concrete is all damaged too.

wonder if the driver had insurance? does the driver have to pay?

it's crazy how auckland drivers seem to drive in the rain, even though it rains all the time.

and of course 4x4 isn't any better at braking than 2wd.
