OK - after 30yrs in Australia I am returning home to NZ.

Now at present I am paying iinet/Sydney approx A$85/mth for internet and landline phone.
This gives me 200Gb/mth internet download. My current daily usage trend is approx 755MB/day.
I use my land-line phone minimally.
I use my 2 x iPhones moderately. (separate provider) 1Gb allowance/mth/phone & approx 20 mixed calls/mth/phone

Now here in Australia I have stuck with the same internet provider since dial-up days in 1994. (TIG > ihug > iinet [all buy outs]). Why because they provided the BEST deal and the BEST service.

I have swapped my mobile phone providers several times due to COVERAGE then service. Here in Australia there are only two providers of the cellular network infrastructure (Telstra & Optus) all the resellers hang of these two, with Telstra providing the best coverage.

I am looking for an ADSL 2+ internet plus land-line phone plus mobile phone provider/s in the Tauranga/Mt Maunganui areas. I do not mind if they are separate providers for each service or split 2 & 1. Of course an all-in-one bundle would be more convenient.

I would also be interested in the new up and coming Ultra-Fast Broadband network. (http://www.ultrafastfibre.co.nz/get-ultrafast)

for nz mobile coverage your best bet is generally vodafone, and telecom. i was duped be 2degrees claim of roaming onto 2degrees network, but if 2degrees some towers in a large area, then the whole area will blocked from roaming.

they're both pretty expensive though. so you may still want to consider 2degrees on one of your phones with backup of vodafone or telecom.

ufb is region specific to a degree atm, and i don't know anything about your area, but other providers should be able to provide adsl or vdsl nationwide.

As CoffeeBaron mentioned, we're based in Tauranga and provide ADSL, VDSL & UFB. We have a voice services (using VoIP terminated to the managed router we provide) as well.

If you send me a PM with your address I can check the three services for availability and reply with the options.

Edit: oh and for mobile, I'd recommend 2degrees. They have their own network in Tauranga and though others will likely disagree, I've found it has the best overall Tauranga coverage (have used Vodafone and Telecom in the past 12 months in other projects).

Thanks for all the replies guys - I forgot to mention that we will not be returning till May 2014 and that this is the early planning & researching stage. I have already posted a different post in the Home Theatre forum concerning Kiwi TV receiving equipment etc. My partner & I have always been early planners. (we are usually the first to arrive at a party

). We have even started putting out preliminary CV's and job feelers. We know a lot can change in a year but forewarned is forearmed.

Cool well feel free to get in touch - maybe closer to the time once you've got a confirmed address as that will dictate to a degree the options. No doubt pricing will change in the next 12 months as well.

OK so 11 days to go and counting down.

Will be renting (still looking) in the Tauranga/Mt Maunganui area, can the forum recommend someone for this area to come and eye ball and test any prospective property. Then make recommendations, if any, re what equipment and wiring from street to building to inside and throughout the building. What would be needed to rectify any deficiencies.

I would prefer someone who is not affiliated with any communications provider.

I will properly be going VDSL, though if Fibre is there (to the property) would look at that.

I am used to ADSL2+ here in Sydney with approx 15Mbps DL speed as well as being spoilt with monthly price to data allowance as stated above compared to Kiwi rates.

I live in Mt Maunganui and signed up with Snap Fibre - works great and pricing a little bit more than xDSL. Snap are very good, and if you get a data pack you get unmetered downloads between 1am/7am. You can get xDSL with them too.

Check the UFF website (http://www.ultrafastfibre.co.nz/) to check whether your rental can get fibre. Many areas of the mount can get fibre.

I'm not sure you need anyone to precheck your house but it may be worth calling telecom to see if the place can get xDSL before signing a rental contract.

I can help with any wiring requirements. I do have some affiliation with a few providers, so I am happy to advise on cabling etc only and leave others to make suggestions for suitable ISP.

This is my preference:

ISP - Local EOL company.

Mobile - Telecom - I found that Telecom has consistently better coverage than Vodafone (in Tauranga). I haven't had much experience with 2Degrees in Tauranga.

I should add:

I will be running an Apple WiFi 802.11ac network set-up along with a Panasonic smart tv and PVR all coming off whatever MODEM I require, because I know even now DVD rentals are disappearing so in the near future streaming rental or out right download movie purchases will be the way. I also do alot of Skype.

Do not know the quality of NZ Freeview channels yet, but have looked at Vodafone TV (?????).

But my point is whether I get VDSL or UFB - I WANT GOOD QUALITY (speed and continuity) downloads. I do not want the wiring in the property to be the bottle neck.

Of course I realise that this is all conjecture at this point as it depends upon what is already there or not and on how much wiring etc the landlord will allow.

You have answered your own question - get UFB (if available) - and UFB may be cheaper than VDSL.

I use TrustPower for my connection at home, you can bundle it with your Power/Gas account as well. They offer ADSL, VDSL or UFB. Are also local to Tauranga. I think a few other suppliers can do UFB in Tauranga (Full Flavour, Orcon and Snap?)

For mobile I would probably recommend 2Degrees as mentioned in other posts, Last time I was in Tauranga they had the best coverage/speed for me between Telecom/2Degrees plus also 2degrees have just launched Share Everything plans so might be handy for you and your wife depending on what your mobile needs are. Although Vodafone do have 4G launched in parts of Tauranga from my understanding so may pay to look down that route as well.

OK folks have landed in Aotearoa including the cats, in Tauranga and have rented a property in Maitland St Greerton. The street only has ADSL at this time but I am assuming Cameron Road has UFB and one day (soon) it will come down our street.

We have decided to go with Telecom (Spark) as we already have their SIM's for our iPhones and will bundle mobile, land line and internet.

Doing some research I believe? Telecom use Huawei HG630b modem which does ADSL, VDSL & UFB - what are these like? I note they only have WiFi 802.11b/g/n and not the latest WiFi 802.11b/g/n/ac protocol. (I have the latest iMac & Time Capsule which uses the latest AC protocol). Are there any similar modem's with the latest protocol?

I also now have (still boxed) a Panasonic 50" LED TH-L50E6Z TV and a DMR-BWT835GZ PVR both have DLNA & WiFi.

Plus 2 iPhones and 2 iPads.

So the idea is to set up a complete APPLE home network using all these products.

I would like to be able to connect the: TV/PVR to VEIRA Connect internet services plus Stream my iTunes content (music, movies etc) to the TV/AV receiver. As this is a rental property I would prefer to do all this wirelessly as opposed to running cables all over the place.

Any ideas/opinions on all of this?

If you are renting, that alters things -
For example, if you were to install UFB (if and when it comes) - with your landlord's permission, of course - then you would have to pay a hefty Early Termination Fee if you moved on before your fibre contract was completed. However, if you are stuck with ADSL2, then a change of address would be free of charge.
