i ordered fibre with telecom and just received my modem pack.

inside there is a notice saying i should give the enclosed patch cable to the installer but i didnt seem to see one. is it inside the box with the modem? its just a normal ethernet cable?

i rang telecom and got a rude woman said she doesnt know what that is and that "it should be there" and "i should be right"

could someone tell me if the patch cable just the ethernet cable inside the box or it should of came separate?

It's the Ethernet cable.

Fibre is delivered via the ONT which is owned and installed by the LFC ie Chorus or Enable.

You will use the Blue ethernet cable to connect from the RGW which is the router Telecom supplied to you into port 1 of the ONT.

The patch cable that telecom are refering to is the RJ12 to RJ12 copper patch cable (lately supplied in a small pastic bag with your modem). This is the one that the installer is requested to connect the 1st ATA port, of the ONT, to the RJ45 Socket (that the installer should install on the end one pair of the composite cable (sometimes call hybrid) ) so that when Telecom activates the ATA port in the future the circuit can be tested and connected to your legacy wireing.

The installers do not carry any spares for the Service Providers supplied Routers

Not yet, but it's launching soon.

Their NEAX VoIP linecard solution failed miserably so they've had to hunt down a Broadworks instruction manual which is arguably the solution they should have been using in the first place!

i rang telecom again and again they have no clue what i'm talking about. But this time the woman contacted Chorus and Chorus confirmed all i need is the blue ethernet cable

Best way to explain this one:

When a ISP refers to a patch cable to a customer they will generally be refering to the RJ45 8 Cables 4 pairs) Commonly refered to as a Ethernet cable. In UFB terms this will be running from the ONT (usually the LAN1 or WAN1 port to the WAN port in the router.

The RJ12 (4 cables 2 Pair) cable is the same as a "DSL" cable this usually will be running from the "ATA" or "POTS" port in the ONT (or Router) to a jackpoint(s)/phone switch panel or directly to a phone to run your voip services direcly from the ONT or router depending on the ISP.

Thats strange, shouldn't they be installing a VoIP card in the same chassis as the OLT? or do you mean the NEAX can't interconnect over IP with the SIP switches yet?

Time to find a new industry!

Telecom invested a lot of money into custom building (well NEC custom building) NEAX SIP line cards which while being the world's biggest ever hack, was an ingenious solution as it saved building an entirely new FAB process and systems.

Your ONT or ISAM-V port if you were on a cabinet would have connected back to this card via SIP.

I was pretty impressed with their tape backup system for the NEAX computers.

A computer that backs up to a digital file, but talks to the magnetic tape machine on the NEAX via its tape heads - like the old CD to Cassette car audio kits for discmans
