Hi Guys,

I have just moved to a new location in Nelson, its over the hill in Aniseed Valley, so slightly rural (Not by much though.. LOL)

There is a nice shiny new Spark cabinet just about 800m from the address, I thought we would get a good connection.

There are 2 houses on the property, one the landlords, one is mine. The landlord has ADSL with Spark, but the speeds are total rubbish when Im over there. The house i am in is all new and has its own second line running into it. Im thinking of signing up with 2 degrees for adsl on my line but I dont want to do it if I get the same horrible speeds. I am thinking the old house the landlord is in has very poor internal wiring, but I have no way that I know of to find out.
I called 2Deg and they said we should see approx 7mb downloads in our location. See attached to get an idea of what we are actually getting at the landlords place. Its hopeless.

I have been trying to get hold of Spark for 4 days to maybe buy ADSL from them, thats just hopeless. Noone will answer a phone or call you back at that company... Or at least find out what the likely speeds should be.

So can anyone help with advice as to know what speeds I should be getting? Is there anyway to test the wiring in my place? I dont want to signup and pay everything to continue to get 0.6mb downloads on adsl...

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

spark dont have cabinets for ADSL/VDSL or UFB, chorus owns the majority of that type of equipment

and please stop testing over Wifi when tryingto diagnose a fixed line connection, it only adds another point of degradation to the mix

you need to provide the information that peter reader asks for so people can better help you

for all we know the landlords connection is at 7mbps and the wifi is just crap

Do your replies make you feel vastly superior..... Im trying my best here.

No large downloads in the background, Spark ISP, I have tried with a laptop plugged directly into the Router - Same deal) ahve tried a new router - Same deal.

Not sure how to get DSL stats from a Linksys WAG200G?

You firstly need to stop testing on WiFi. It's not accurate. The only thing that's relevant is DSL sync stats.

Without knowing an exact address it's not possible to really say a lot, but looking at maps there don't appear to be any new cabinets in Aniseed valley, and certainly no ISAMs. There are two old ATM cabinets which I'll assume are Cocklin's. If this is the case nothing is going to change your connection speed.

If it is a "Conklin" cabinet, is that the expected speed for them? I was just confused as 2Deg said they expected that address to have download speeds of 7mb...

No but unless you can actually provide some information then we can not help you.

its like talking a car into a mechanic and saying its making a funny noise. first question is what kind of noise, second is where from.

peter reader up there has kindly asked the most common questions that we need to know to try and help diagnoise any issues you may be having or in your case give you an indication on what you could expect based on your land lords connection.

so instead of thinking im trying to make myself sound superior, how about you actually answer the questions, so we can try and help you.

that will up to 7mbps as by the looks you are on a conklin as Sbiddle has mentioned. check out the link he posted.

there is not much you will be able to do to get a better connection, and at peak times it may grind to a hault

Ahhh OK, Bummer...

So the 7mb is "theoretical" and the speeds I am seeing are "typical"?

If this is the case I wont bother with an ADSL connection at all as its not really usable for anything much. :-(

7mbps is the maximum you can get, the speeds you are seeing on his connection are typical yes.

maybe look into RBI wireless
