The fact the infrastructure is up-gradable to this, even if its not needed right now is a great success in New Zealand's UFB policy. Take a look at Australia just doing fibre to the cabinet now, something we had 10 years ago as a stopgap. They will need to redo the entire NBN with Fibre to the premise whereas NZ is sorted for this.

I read this certainly as a heck of a lot of marketing more than anything else.

It's well known that Fibre is upgradable to 10GPON from the current GPON. Teaching that to those who are like, "Why should i upgrade to fibre if there will be a newer better fibre later" could be the winning gold in hey! lets get it installed!

 We need 10G because it then pushes the drive for 10G CPE in homes. 

We had this same debate when we talked about needing 1G switches in homes and not just the DC. 

This is all about continuing to drive the consumer electronics market place.  We can't stop just because we completed something.  We have to start on the next thing and keep paddling.

Or you could pause after providing 1Gb fibre to those people that have it and roll it out to everyone else who doesn't*, before you go upgrading those who already have fibre again. If you want to drive the consumer electronics market, that's probably a better ROI.

*Yes, RBI2 will provide more LTE in rural areas, but it will still be crippled with data caps for a long time, if not forever. If you have a copper line coming into your house, you should be able to replace it with glass.

Otherwise they will finish with the 1 gig roll out, and then go "perhaps we should start looking at 10gig" which would be more delays.

IMO they should do another gigatown type thing _now_ for the 10 gig stuff. Perhaps start with beach haven?

Alright, fair point, but at least I would argue that the switch from 1G to 10G doesn't require another taxpayer funded national project. People who really need to switch from 1G to 10G can surely pay $150 for their own replacement ONT. After all, they're going to be replacing the rest of their internal network equipment and end user devices already so that they can access it.
