Am switching from BigPipe to Skinny - don't need a static IP anymore, and Gigabit is a bit cheaper on Skinny - previously had 100/100 with BigPipe.

Switch date is set for today - 6am according to Skinny, and I've set the BigPipe disconnection date to be tomorrow. I'm still up & running on BigPipe currently though (on an EdgeRouter).

I've not managed that many Fibre ISP changes, as we've only had Fibre here for a year or two - should I expect to be able to configure my router for Skinny (basically enable VLAN tagging) and expect that to work right now, or should my BigPipe connection have dropped off? (This is what I was expecting to happen.)

I've got a backup file for the Edgerouter that I've pre-setup for Skinny that I can get the missus to restore at home and see if it works, and if not, restore the current config back, but I don't want to leave it to tonight, find out Skinny haven't actually enabled the connection & have no internet at home tomorrow.

Any thoughts on that appreciated. I'm sure many of you are very familiar with this process & know what to expect. Thanks!

You'll know as your connection on the ER will drop. Both use PPPoE so you'll need to update auth credentials.
Once the connection drops - reconfigure auth credentials and should be a go!

I think, that whilst they are both on PPPoE, credentials don't matter (so long as there are some).

You may not notice when it changes over.

You're not going to notice anything apart from an IP address change.

BigPipe doesn't use VLAN tagging and Skinny does though? I can see my external IP hasn't changed, and I have rebooted the router just to make sure.

Edit - or do either combination of settings work being that it's all Spark at the back end? Pretty sure I tried VLAN tagging with BigPipe and got no joy with it.

Have fired Skinny an email anyway just to check.

My Skinny router has no VLan tagging - setting for 802.1q=no

My first ever AM radio network connection was with a 1MHz AM crystal(OA91) radio receiver.

I decided to do a live chat with Skinny, just as I'd started chatting, the connection dropped & came back wit a new IP (Right on 1pm). Rather ironic timing, but definitely working without VLAN tagging. Thanks for everyone's input.

Did you use your own modem? As I got put off Skinny by this answer in their FAQ.

Can I use my own modem?
No. To snap up the great Skinny Unlimited Broadband offer, you’ll need to purchase the super-speedy Skinny Smart Modem. This modem has been set up specifically to make the most of the network so you get the best speeds possible.

I am using my own router, but if I had an issue, I would put theirs in before contacting them.

Cool, I might switch then. I am happy with Bigpipe, but its hard to pass up 3 months free and a $10 saving each month after that.

Thanks
