Friend lives out in rural South Auckland (Near Pukekohe) and lives on 4Mbps ADSL - which he had to run himself from the road down a long shared drive.

Wireless options - expensive as he is (or would like to be) a reasonably heavy user at times.

Mobile/cellular - no/extremely poor coverage

Fiber - haha

Starlink - not available for his area (W.T.F)

Poor sod can't cop a break when it comes to internet connectivity......  if he is at home alone, he can game and watch Netflix etc quite happily. The second another device connects, everything goes to crap. Buffer and lag city.

A farm property behind his has fiber as their main entrance is on a main road. He is tempted to go see them and setup a direct Wifi link..... :)

One day, he may experience above 4Mbps, but until then, a friend waits..... for his download to finish.

I noticed that map on starlink.com seems to update every time there is a launch, saw 3 cells around Pukekohe where there was no availability recently but it is now down to 1 between Pukekohe - Waiuku and Glenbrook.

Yeah he looked over weekend, and he's still in a no-go zone.

You say no / Little cellular coverage, that will be with a cellphone.

Using an external antenna pointing to the tower with greatly improve things.

If starlink is a no go then I would be using 4G with two antenna's.

@coffeebaron will probably be better to make that call as he does that all day every day.

No local WISPS ?

That is the best alternative to ADSL if he is a gamer, 4G/Starlink is still terrible latency (not for regular use but for gaming)

Their unlimited data is the same as starlink, only if they are in the coverage area.

+1 for Wheronet.
(I was about to recommend them)

Otherwise he should Move.

Having struggled through this scenario for a few years.  Even with externals, if the tower loading is heavy, you still get bumped, often to one that is no better than his ADSL

WOI have coverage across rural Pukekohe

Wheronet not available either according to their coverage.

He has a farm, he can't exactly just "move" to get decent internet :D

Some of us have family, jobs etc that tie us to our home, and can't just up and move because theres one thing we dont like :D

Am living in the same area.
Have been living with this problem since 2000
Have fiber running right across my front gate.
The fiber actually is less than 1/2 meter away from my phone line.
And they want $6000 to connect me, like really ?

$6000, while a lot of money, sounds quite reasonable for this. I've heard of a lot of quotes      much more than that to get connected.

I'd be saving up and paying that if I were in the same situation.

I would move heaven and earth to find $6K, in the grand scheme its a bargain price for an unsubsidised fibre connection,

I've just got Starlink and live in Golding Road, Pukekohe East. Very good speeds 100-300 Mbps. Maybe see if you can contact Starling support directly for help on why his location is a no go.

I paid $14k to get connected to the rural fibre cable that runs right past our gate.
All that was required was for Chorus to dig until they found the fibre, splice into one of the fibres and run a fibre cable from there up our telephone pole and into the house.
Best investment ever.

And I'm sure has increased the value of the property as the only other place that has fibre anywhere near us is the school about 2km down the road.

Then it's about a 15km drive into town before you get to a UFB area.

That's what you saw happen on site; part two is likely that at the other end you've got a $5k? Optical Line Terminal meant to be shared amongst 16x houses dedicated to you alone.

Wireless bridge to the neighbours and a second port on their ONT is a good option.

Might be able to move the DSL modem down to the end of the driveway and run PoE back from it to the house.
