Hi

I live in terraced housing at 1 George Street, Newmarket and was wondering if anybody could shed some light on what the situation with UFB rollout is.

I'm not sure how it works in this case - Which part of the cabling is provided by chorus, and which part would we have to do ourselves? Currently, the POTS lines go to a central point in the basement and are wired to each house from there, but those lines go up through the concrete, so I'm not sure how you'd get a fibre cable through. Seems that when they built this place 10 years ago they never considered that we might have new cables soon...

We also don't seem to be on any of the maps for a UFB area.

I'm pretty sure we aren't cabinetised either, so even the DSL isn't great. Sync speeds are around 10mbps right now on slingshot LLU.

There's a whole section in the UFB contractual work regarding multi dwelling units (MDUs) but I'm not sure terrace housing counts as one of those. I always envisioned it as apartments in a high rise - not a series of side-by-side houses.

Presumably you all have your own power, water and phone connections today - wouldn't the same be true under UFB?

From that address it looks like you're not in VDSL2 coverage, nor are you in UFB coverage either.

So it looks like what you have is going to be the best you're going to get for at least the short term, or you may have to move to get faster internet.

The closest Fibre cabinet to you is RUE/FFP56

If you also plug this Chorus link into Google maps you will see you're outside that coverage too :(

We do have our own phone line from that central point in the building I mentioned, so I guess it could be that chorus would put the lines through to that point in the basement. I think power and water are similar - so even though it's terraced houses it's actually built more like an apartment, since the houses are on top of a garage with commercial units under that. A little difficult to describe accurately!

I guess this is a pretty specific question but I'm not sure if I could just call chorus and ask them what the situation was?

I'm also curious as to why we aren't getting a cabinet either - you'd think that if UFB is going to take some time then we'd get a VDSL cabinet or something, but not really being in a residential area most of the places around us are on vector fibre anyway (Including the vector office!)

Don't know about cabinets I'm afraid but it does sound like you're a MDU and Chorus will have a page on the site somewhere about all of that.

Newmarket is included within our UFB rollout plans, but we are still to finalise the deployment timing for the area - you can visit our website to see an online map outlining the Auckland UFB candidate area, our first and second year deployment plans and business fibre areas: http://www.chorus.co.nz/fibre-rollout-map

Its still too early to say how we will connect some Multi Dwelling Units (MDUs), it will have to be assessed on a case by case basis as each will be different, but there are a wide range of different access solutions which will have to be discussed and agreed with the building / complex owner.

We're working with the industry to help Retail Service Providers better understand the UFB connection process and work through some of these issues first hand. This will help provide them with the insights they need for their own product development process, so they can create the right service experience for their customers.

Hi Robyn, do you see FTTP > VDSL2 in the plan of things, many of these apartments would be a pain to get either Cat5 let alone OS1 reticulated so existing phone wiring may be all you can do at a reasonable $

FTTP vs. VDSL2? That's up to retail service providers. It's our job to hum along building and maintaining the network so providers can deliver the services their customers rely on.

We recognise that connecting MDUs could be challenging, but access can sometimes come in many different forms such as re-use of power risers or water risers and external cabling has been used overseas. We will need to work through MDU deployment issues on a case-by-case basis in agreement with the complex owner / body corporate / tenants etc.

the problem with newmarket is that there isn't much cabinetisation and it's half way between remuera and the city exchanges.

10 megabit is a fast sync rate for that area - you can probably thank llu for that. you've probably got a 6db snr margin.

when i looked at ufb maps for the area you really have to be a bit closer to remuera to get it pre/post june..

there are some vdsl cabinets in the area, but they hardly service any area. closest one looks like it's on broadway and covering about 15 properties.

Do you know if the basement has cat5 cable going from the telephone patch board to the units?

If so, your OTP will probably be placed into the basement, and if the cable run is less than 100m then you can have fibre run over the cat5 direct to your unit.

Quite often cat5 cable is used in apartment buildings because it is cheaper than the old standard telephone cable but performs much better. That may or may not have been the case 10 years ago when they built it.

You can check it by looking behind the master wall outlet in your apartment to see what kind of cable is behind there. If its cat5 it will have only the blue pair connected to the telephone socket, and the green/orange pairs will be left unconnected. Hopefully there will be a seperate cat5 cable going to the secondary telephone outlet from the first outlet.

I'll check that tonight - but your suggesting ethernet over that cable with the fibre modem sitting in the basement (one for each of us) if I understand you correctly?

That sounds interesting - I always forget that telephone is often done over cat 5 now. Iirc the telephone cabling in each unit is cat5 so hopefully that's what they used for the run up to the units also.

Cat5e distribution is not a supported UFB scenario. There will always be fibre run to each apartment, and you'll quite possibly face a hefty bill for this.

There is nothing stopping smart companies (and body corp) from jumping onto this and offering building based services over copper, but a service from an RSP won't be delivered over copper.
