TrueNet has taken a more focused approach in its latest publication of ISP broadband performance measures.
We look more specifically at the download performances of New Zealand banks. All data refers to a 24-hour survey between the 26th and 27th March 2012.

The conclusion I take away from this is that load times are quicker for ISPs which peer at national peering exchanges, with the exception of National Bank.

Interesting that TSB and Westpac and Trademe are so much slower for Telecom/Telstraclear given their unilateral free peering arrangement.

ANZ in Aussie sucks too.. I've noticed no difference in either my NZ or Aus accounts... in fact, NZ one is probably quicker in NZ.

does this include images etc? i just tried a quick check with my web browser - and anz seemed to load slighty faster than westpac. it seems westpac has a bigger image?

Although in my testing just now westpac went down for a short while! Was giving connection refused. It's back again now.

i hope it's just that it's doing something weird if testing too much. But it's pretty suspicious returning completely different content size sometimes....

maybe your testing can pick this up?

i'm also curious if you're planning to test 3g networks (in tethering mode) too. as i've personally experienced the frustrating slowness of westpac on 2degrees -- while other sites were faster. (westpac using huge images, and not enabling server side compression probably isn't helping)

ok it seems back up again now. and westpac site seems to be going faster than it was. chrome benchmarking plugin with cache clearing seems to say that westpac is indeed faster than anz. maybe westpac just got slow before stopping completely.

still.. it's nothing like twice as long?

the only way i can come close on the bnz results is like:

Your testing is from a single PC in a single connection. TrueNet is testing from multiple connections, in different ISPs. A lot of difference in the information collected...

Hey,

Just wondering, which ISP are you with?

As always. there may be varying results, and because we're reporting averages some of our probes will get better results than others and other probes will have worse results.

It was included in the results as a reference site.

You'd still expect the average to give some kind of meaningful result. In my testing, I've never found a normal web site that loads in 0.1 seconds. nzcouriers.co.nz seems to be the highest performing web site I've tested over time, giving minimum load times of 0.320 seconds. (trademe at 0.355)

Averages over lots of connections don't really tell me what "typical" performance is like. They'd include both low and high sync rates, full interleaved, low interleaved, no interleaved connections. connections in Auckland, Dunedin etc where performance could change significantly etc etc.
