Yeah my cat5e goes to a splitter, not a master filter.

I just looked around and I wonder if some of these discussions shouldn't be in their own topics as they're individual problems/configurations and not general VDSL Performance and Tuning tips and tricks.

I also feel bad posting Telecom VDSL questions in the Snap forum! But there isn't much discussion going on over there...

But if you don't post then the discussion doesn't happen. That's why we have subforum by individual ISPs - each is different.

Also it's hard for people to go through 110+ pages looking for something when there are too many conversations of different problems at the same time.

As requested I have unlocked this thread.

Please discuss generic VDSL tweaks and options. Anything ISP specific should go into the ISP subforum in a new thread for each problem.

If things don't go into the ISP specific subforum then people can't get help from their own ISP folks here.

Nearly all of the discussion here is generic as it relates to the VDSL service Chorus is offering. I'm a Telecom customer but nearly all of the Snap discussion applies to me also.

Yeah, I think freitasm is saying that if there is anything specifically ISP related then it should go in the forum for that ISP. I don't think generic VDSL discussions are a problem.

So... I had a power outage last night and this morning I noticed that my SNRM was 3dB lower than I had set it! I recall that someone else (SteveHodge I think) had this happen to them just before they were put on 17a! Unfortunately my error rate was 8 CRCPM so I had to change my SNRM tweak. I set it back to stock and did a 5min restart, but alas, the 3dB drop was gone :(

I've been running a -4ish SNRM tweak for a while, then I went to +10, then back to stock (0), then back to -4 for a few days, and then I had the power outage, after which the additional -3db was observed. I've seen SNRM naturally fluctuate by 1 and sometimes 2, but never 3.

I think there may be factors other than just attenuation which are considered for 17a selection:
- Error rate (<2?)
- DLM profile (DLM-1?)
- Sync rate (maybe it has to be above 50mbit?)

Can those of you on 17a recall what your conditions were leading up to your 17a swap?

I might just run at stock again for a while and see what happens.

I had similar when I reconnected after the power outage in my area the other night - my target SNRM is set at the standard 12 (and has been ever since I dropped off DLM1) but a while after reconnecting I checked and it was sitting on a very steady 9db... I sorta figured that my reconnection happened before most other people, so at the time of reconnection my SNRM was probably 12, but then it dropped to 9db with the added crosstalk as everyone else on my street reconnected. Not sure if this is how it works or how plausible that is, but that was what I thought, lol.

Yeah I've some weird fluctuations with SNRM. It happened when I was on 8b, but it's also happened on 17a. While I was on DLM-2 recently (with -2 db tweak for target was 10db) I had quite a bit of variation of 1-2db and then suddenly, without a resync, it dropped to a very consistent 8db and stayed that way. You can see it in this graph:

The drop to 0 was a problem with my logging setup. The jump back to 10db is the DLM resync that put me back on DLM-1. I then removed the -2 db tweak and it been pretty consistently 12 db since then.

It must be something the DSLAM is doing because it's clearly different to the usual fluctuations. Whether we tweak our target or the DSLAM does the result is the same: higher sync but more errors.

My error rate was pretty bad before I went to 17a. Not sure if it was over 2 per minute or not - it's probably mentioned in one of my posts from back then. My sync rate was definitely under 50 Mbit/s. I was on DLM-1. I think there are other factors involved too, but I suspect they are more likely to be related to the other connections in the cabinet - e.g. cross talk analysis, or total load.

Did it recover again to 12 without a reboot? I don't think that crosstalk was the cause of my SNRM drop as it gained 3dB instantly after a reboot.

It recovered to 10 (which was the target I had set) without a reboot, that was just the normal DLM resync. It went back to 12 after I removed the -2 db tweak. I did reboot when I did that.

It returned to 12 when DLM kicked in and bumped me to DLM4. Since then it's been a completely rock solid 12.
