Is this on 4000Mbps plan? Can you do speed test to Auckland 2Degrees and any Melbourne servers  ?

Also do you get access to change wifi settings etc?

Yes, it is the 4Gbps plan. I will do speed tests later. I did a quick test on a server in Wellington this afternoon. It is 3.7Gbps downloading and 3.2Gbps uploading.

What we can do with the Nokia ONT:

1. Change WiFI setting.

2. Change port forwarding.

Functions need admin permission to operate. Your provider may configurate it remotely.

1. Change the LAN settings, including DHCP options, router ip address, static DHCP entries. If you need static ip address, you can set it on your devices instead of using DHCP.

2. Change the Bridge/Gateway mode.

3. Change the internet connection settings (PPPOE/DHCP etc).

I cannot find a proper way to test the NAT performance.

Also from once you placed your order, how long did you have to wait before install date?

Yes saw that but wanted to just get a gauge on if it takes the full 20 days or it can happen sooner. Seeing that a few people have had their connection setup done would be nice to know how back logged chorus are.

I know I have to wait it out but just can't wait.. Lol 😂

Signup on the 12th of Oct. with myrepublic. Got update from Chorus 14 Oct.  "

Now in network design stage.

What does this mean?
Chorus need to ensure that they have network capacity and coverage from the nearest fibre exchange to your address. Nobody needs to visit you for this as this work is done by Chorus either at their fibre exchange or between the exchange and your street."

It's already 7 of Nov. still no update from them. The lead time when I sign up is 24 days.

I signed up on 12th Oct. Chorus needs around one month to get prepared for your installation. Chorus postponed my ONT replacement twice. But I talked to the technician kindly and he came to replace it for me one week early.

By the way, it can reach more than 200MB/s when I download from Steam, NZ server. It was no more than 70MB/s with 1Gbps from 2degress.

What's your new setup consist of? Gateway Router, switch?

The new ONT can work as the router and wireless access point. It is pretty heavy. The performance is acceptable for normal home user.  The only thing you need is a 10Gbps switch. I am using two 40Gbps switches from Mellanox, another 1Gbps switch from Unifi as well as access points. I am planning to use my own 10Gbps router (CCR2004-1G-12S+2XS) when the ONT is changed to bridge mode.

I strongly suggest fibre switches and network adapters. They can be much cheaper. CRS305-1G-4S+IN is good model to start if you only have one or two devcies running on 10Gbps. Netgear switches are also good options if you do not like fibre switch.

You can connnect the 1Gbps switch you have to the 10Gbps switch for your other 1Gbps devices, and your access points if you have a big area to cover.

I figured out how to change the ONT to bridge mode. I already connected the CCR2004-1G-12S+2XS as router.

Here are some tests (through speedtest app, not web).

The app doesn't allow me to choose server in LA. My Steam downloading now can reach 2Gbps.

Those are really good speeds, I cant wait to get my connection setup, hoping before Christmas(I signed up on 24th October)

Any speed difference between running ONT as gateway router vs CCR2004-1G-12S+2XS as router? Also you were able to change ONT to bridge yourself
without needing Chorus or MyRepublic?

Thanks

Speedtest, no difference. The ONT only has a simple WebUI and basic functions. It's enough for normal usage at home.

The CCR2004 has a better performance with NAT on 64bytes packets and some advanced functions. If you already have a 10Gbps switch, I would suggest saving the money. If you are buying yourself a toy to play in Christmas, go for it.

PM me to discuss the bridge mode please.

The overall expeirence of MyRepublic is actually good. I chose the Gamer Fibre 4000, which contains the static ip address. I signed up on 12th, Oct and I got a sms saying they were working on it in that week. Chorus installation(ONT replacement) took some time. I was connected on 7th, Nov. It was Friday, Chorus notifed MyRepublic on Monday that the installation was finished and I got my static ip address after chatting with customer service of MyRepublic. The new ONT will not be attached to your wall. You need to prepare a clean space(flat surface) for the new ONT to stand.

The Hyperfibre is new. The technician from Chorus was not famliliar with it but he has a good instruction in hand. Most customer service representatives from MyRepublic know it well, but not everyone. If you are forwarded to their specialists, they have good knowlege of hyperfibre and related configrations. They can help you to switch your ONT between bridge mode and router mode. But it involves Chrous, so it takes time.

I want to talk about more about the performance. I tested two 10Gbps routers as well as the ONT self. The two routers are MikroTik CCR2004-1g-12s+2xs (CCR2004) and UniFi Dream Machine Pro (UDM PRO).  They use the similiar(mabye the same) SoC.

Here are the speed test results with a same server.

UDM PRO.

CCR2004

ONT

The 2degree's test server in Auckland is one of the fastest for me. After tweaking and upgrading my two new routers, they are faster than ONT. Please enable flow control for these high speed devices.

I have an issue with CCR2004. It has problem with my 40Gb network adapters, the upload speed drops to 300Mbps. But the intel 10Gb ones work well. I have reported this bug and I am not sure when it can be fixed. Last simliar bug on SwOS took a very long time.

The UDM PRO came with a 1.6.x firmware and the update function in the GUI didn't work. I had to upgrade it to 1.8.0 manually using the SSH command. The performance was worse before upgrading. This product still needs polishment.

For now, UDM PRO is a better choice and it is also a little bit cheaper than CCR2004.

I am also going to install a RouterOS (the OS running on CCR2004) on my old Xeon E5 server and see if it is better on NAT performance. It needs some time. I will post the resutls when I finish.

MyRepublic is providing a excellent broadband product and good service in my personal opinion. The only thing missing is IPv6. It is still new and Chorus may need a long time to replace your ONT, please be lenient.

That is a very bold statement. This is what I mean by you're better to wait until more providers are offering this service. Also the tests you've posted are all domestic, the problems with MyRepublic stem when you test internationally especially to the US. On all instances of Hyperfibre on MyRepublic I've seen the performance difference isn't worth the $100 extra per month and in nearly all cases my Gigabit broadband with 2degrees actually has them beat with international connectivity.

But they are not going to provide in a short time. There are only two options in the market. What I need is high speed speed in NZ and reasonable speed to AU and US. I am working from home. You do not need domestic speed doesn't mean I do not need it, right? Isn't the 2000Mps to AU faster than your 900Mbps?

Check my speed test to AU here. https://www.speedtest.net/my-result/d/247496561

$100 is not that important when it is related to work. The key point here is return on investment. Joy is a kind of return as well as income. :)

I can get my full line speed there but you can't and we're only talking Sydney so that isn't actually a great result - I am talking about the US where I can also get my full line speed. Hence why currently it isn't worth the extra (in my case) $125 per month.
