nzbnw: freitasm, When do you think we users could expect an antigrav button? I could really do with an early Christmas present!?!?!

We (the mods) already have one... it's called 'Ban' and trust me, the thought has crossed our minds....

I really think he could do with a little less of that antigrav stuff so he could come back to reality...

I can't understand why anyone would want to defend Telecom?

Having arrived back in NZ after some time overseas (more than 10 years), I can't believe how bad NZ telecommunications is. When I left NZ was one of the most connected countries, it’s now lagging behind most other western countries.

Not only are there limited options but pricing for mobiles, Digital TV, home phone and broadband are very overpriced for the limited services supplied.

For example in The US I was on a 900 minute plan that cost me $60 a month. I could use those minutes anytime of the day/week, also before you say but that’s US dollars, you have to remember that if your earn $75K NZ then doing that job in the US will probably pay you at least $75K US.

So IMHO the split of Telecom is very much needed to get NZ Broadband up and moving again.
Not to mention it might force telecom to feed some of its huge profit back into the infrastructure instead of the overseas shareholders.

No one is defending Telecom New Zealand. Read all posts again.

We just don't like people that keep complaining, complaining, and instead of doing something (change ISPs, change plans, read the T&Cs) just keep on complaining.

Is this hard to understand?

Do you think Telecom New Zealand is bad?

Did you know Telstra only now "unleashed" their connections? Do you know how bad it's there? Read on this thread: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?ForumId=49&TopicId=10284

People keep saying how unbundling is going to be great, often saying how this has benefited Australian telco landscape. No, I am sorry, people are misinformed. Read the thread I linked.

And welcome to Geekzone.

You just can't compare countrys like that!
The US is a big country, with overall lots of flat land, where as NZ is wuite the opposite.
To put it simply and not argue EVERY of the HUNDREDS of FACTORS.
NZ = Fewer people on more things (eg cell towers) US = More people on fewer...

Removing all the US-NZ comparison, which I don't think is valid, this is a good point.

Did I say anyone here was defending Telecom? No if I was going to do that I would've have quoted them.

And if I could change plans I would, I used to be on Telstra Cable but due to my new location that is not an option so I'm left with either no home phone or Telecom. Oh and I sent a letter to My local MP explaining my issue with NZ current setup, so I’m not just complaining on this site.

And yes I was living in Australia for the last 4 years. Yeah I read the thread and I wasn't with Telstra and neither was anyone I knew, I was with iinet as at the time they where the best option (local/national/international phone/ADSL). I will agree that the digital TV options are just as bad as here though.

The US was just an example, I fully realise that NZ is not the same as the US demographically.

Oh and if your having an issue finding a decent provider in Aus try here http://www.whirlpool.net.au/

More interesting reading http://www.internetnz.net.nz/pubs/other/2006-05-29-oecd-broadband-markets

:) cheers freitasm for the welcome.

I will have to disagree with freitasm on the complaining issue. Although it does get kinda repetitive and tedious, I think that people that come to these forums in search of answers on the quality of ISPs and telecomunication providers deserve to know just how dissatisfied people are with Telecom.

That in itself is 'doing something about it', and i will elaborate:
- Lets face it, there is really very little people can do agaist Telecom/Xtra except to choose alternate providers for telecomunication and internet (I did this already).
- People, like me, usually come across these forums by searching for ISP options.
- By posting my complaint and dissatisfaction with Telecom/Xtra, I will also affect change in people that are on this site and choosing their next internet provider - nobody in their right mind will take up a Telecom plan after reading posts by the multitude of people that have a problem with it on these forums.
- Such people will likewise tell their friends/relatives not to suscribe to Telecom... and so on.

Hopefully, by losing out on clients Telecom will either realize they need to start providing the service they are charging people for, or will be forced to do so by becoming one of the minor providers due to competition taking over. Might take a bit of time for this to be realized but communicating our dissatisfaction is the first, crucial step.

Fair enough, it is a good point. Making sure their voice is heard is an action, and posting here is certainly visible within Telecom New Zealand. But forcing their opinions onto others by continuously bashing Telecom (or Vodafone as it happened before) and abusing anyone who disagrees with their views is not an acceptable action.

Agreed, blatant bashing is certainly unacceptable and does not achieve my aforemetioned point. I was refering to people that exhibit their frustation about the actual Telecom service with some level of credibility - though I can hardly see how someone can force their opinion on someone else on a public forum... must not have read some of the more fruitful topics... :)

a public forum...

Remembering of course (though i think sometimes people forget), that like a bar, Geekzone is privately owned, and merely accessible to the general public. The publican makes the rules, and not everyone always agrees with the rules, but thats just the way it is.

We like people to come to our bar, but we dont give them free run, and sometimes they 'arc up' when we put the kybosh on things that we deem unacceptable (like continual and/or overly harsh and/or unfounded comments about how terrible a company is, without a willingness to provide reasonable questions/answers, or participate in a reasonable discussion.

Hmmm... i could talk all night about this stuff, but i have bored myself to death with it already.

It is great to see the NZ government is thinking outside the box.  Any proposals to see the opening-up of the telecoms market place should be welcomed by all genuine consumers.  Why should we, as consumers, fear competition and choice?  Ultimately better services will be offered and the price for broadband services will fall.

Nice to see you have a sense of humour... LLU amounts to nationalisation which is the mark of all left wing socialist governments. What will Comrade Helen do next?
