There is an option to request a UPS install at time of provisioning but obviously comes at a cost, I didnt opt for this option.

Is anybody aware of what type of unit Chorus are fitting? I know the pricing as it's listed in pricing, but I haven't been able to establish what type of hardware they are using - whether it's an ALU unit just for the ONT or whether it has outs for a router/RGW as well.

As wired has already stated you cant swap the ONT because its a GPON product. Chorus can provision up to 4 services on each single mode fibre as there are 4 lan ports on the ONT, meaning in a premesis where you have flat mates and one may want to be with orcon and the other with another provider, each can chose their own provider and get service to their own LAN port, which means the ONT can support 4 connections. The ONT also has 2 ATA ports for voice, 1 of which comes with your internet service and you can pay for the second to be enabled.

The VoIP on the ONT works with a DHCP option 82 on a dedicated voice VLAN, when the ONT starts up it checks for a configuration using dhcp option 82 and XML from memory, I havent looked into it too much but recall having to give a few vlan options, usernams & passwords when setting up the handover port. We're not opting to use the ONT's voip ports at this stage as we use cisco UC500's or UC320's for most of our customers, or they would opt for a SPA2102 or equivalent.

Chorus do have an option at time of provisioning for a RGW, this RGW is not one of their own but a router that the ISP has had accredited with chorus. ISP's can pay ~$3k to get a router accredited which means documentation is done to show the tech how to set it up and how to install it as a CPE at time of install. The ISP then has to keep stock with chorus of these RGW's for time of install. I believe Orcon do this at the moment with their genius product.

in a current adsl based connection, the 'router' does a number of things
adsl connection (equavalent to fibre to ethernet conversion, in a manner of speaking)
ppp dialer
nat
dhcp
QOS
voip
etc.

I suspect the ONT might have some form of QoS to support its VoIP function. but might be only "type of service" prioritising its internal POTS outlet so your router would also need its own QoS. This is the Layer 2 demarcation from Chorus so its not a consumer owned device, and they won't want you playing with (or damaging your eyes with) the single-mode fibre plug either. You probably don't want the ONT doing routing etc since you need your ISP to be controlling that layer.

I think your ISP normally buys service that includes a "virtual private line" over the ONT's Ethernet output from Chorus, so the ONT takes the place of bare copper wires in the old regime. Changing to other ONT device requires your ISP to be buying dark fibre.

Time to find a new industry!
