sbiddle: Green is the standard colour for all Chorus infrastructure.

Orange is only used for power and would never be used for telecommunications infrastructure by any telco.

I had an interesting conversation with someone online about this recently.

Although it is the norm, it is not the case in Christchurch and what appears to be some north island locations now.

Huaweii are providing the ducting for UFB here to Enable (Contracting Chorus), and it is infact Red/ red-Orange. (not to be confused with orange-orange :) ) as seen by the pic on their main site. http://www.enable.net.nz/

Installed in both Halswell, Bishopdale and now Rolleston. In some cases it is put into their thicker green pipe casings (not ducting) for a bit of protection. Terminated at a hub box, And then when it goes to the home, I believe it is the normal 20mm? green buried ducting with a couple of pairs inside.

Hi, that micro duct is distinctly not the Orange that is used for power, its distinctly red.

It would be very in appropriate to use Electrical Orange, which is a regulated colour for power duct applications,

Thats quite interesting. The microducts are much heavier walled than the Ericson stuff that Chorus use. Also less ducts in it. And yea it is a very red duct and no where near 'electrical orange'. Seems a bit weird they made it this red though. Green has been used by Telecom since forever but I guess the Chinese just wanted to do something different!

For the last couple of days I've noticed men installing blue pipes, about 50mm wide, outside where I work. I didn't observe them closely as I was driving in and out, but they seemed to be going down into a hatch that has only been there for about 6 months (by hatch I mean a rectangular metal plate about 1 metre by 800mm that lays flush with the ground and there's a concrete surround). There is writing on the hatch but I can't remember what it says, Telecoms or Telecommunications I think. I'll have another look on Monday. But the pipes were definitely blue.

Hi Murray, was it a duct pipe or the actual contents to go into the duct (ie the fibre itself) all the backhaul fibre is blue around 10-15mm in diameter.

I'm not sure, I really should have gone for a wander in my lunch hour rather than just catching it out of the corner of my eye as I drove past! Sorry, I realise you can't really tell from my sketchy description. All I know for sure was that the pipe was blue, wasn't very wide, and it was being feed down a man hole. I'll report back on Monday!

The reason I was interested is because according to the Chorus map our street isn't scheduled to get UFB in Years 1, 2 or 3. However they have been doing a lot of roadworks on the main road that ours comes off and I thought they may be taking advantage of that to upgrade us.

Hi, if it was on a reel then it will be backhaul fibre, not duct or microduct as others in this thread has shown.

Thanks for the above info. I work next to an Iplex manufacturing plant and I was wondering what the purple and red pipes stored there are used for.
