Come to Christchurch and even Wellington and you can see that the TCL "fat ugly" cable isn't that fat at all.. it is no fatter than Telecom's overhead cable.

Anyway, I'm blissful enough to have TCL cable (underground) in Christchurch... See ya all later, eat my internet dust... *hehe* *VRrrroooooom*

The cable is 8mm or less. Hard to see 10m in the air amoungst the other wires and it would go underground where there were no poles and as other lines are buried.

Jama: Yes and the Korean government provided US$2b in funding for the high capacity backbone along with US$1b in soft loans to address the rural sector.

Given the results of the investment, don´t you think that´s where about US$2b of New Zealand´s surplus should go? I certainly do.

I guess you could say that, but New Zealand has a lot larger land space as stated in this topic, and for New Zealand to get results like they have in South Korea a lot more money will have to be spent that just the $2B. Also, South Korea knew they were going to have a lot more customers compared to New Zealand once it is done due to the population density, so they will be able to pay off the cost of this investment a lot quicker than New Zealand will ever be able to.

Don't get me wrong, I would love the internet in New Zealand to be like that, but it is going to take time due to our geographical situation. My 2c.

Here goes a picture of the various cables strung out down my street. Correct me if I've mis-labeled them.

There seems to be a doubling-up of TCL cable - I don't know if this is normal. It's not particularly attractive, but given that there were power and Telecom cables there before TCL did their bit, I don't think it really matters. I'm happy to have cable internet.

Well, the overhead electricity cable delivering power to my house is fatter than the TCL ones in your picture.

Makes sense to me - they were going to use poles where there were power lines anyway and bury the cable where there were underground power cables. Don't know how anyone could complain about that, but the Auckland councils aren't exactly renowned for their good decisions.

The power cables down my street are about the same width as TCL, but the TCL cable seems to be doubled up for some reason. I don't think this happens on every street - I'm not really a "cable-spotter" :-)

Does anyone know if Korea has a Great Firewall? I have heard of people saying that you can have super fast access to information that you generally dont want, compared to slower speed access to information that you do want / slower access to free information.

I hear this argument used to describe the difference between western countries and places like korea. Anyone know more about this and can confirm or deny?

I don't think South Korea has one... North Korea probably doesn't have any internet access/limited access so thats a different story.

China does however. Found that out the hardway when Wikipedia and BBC got banned.

North Korea only has Dial Up.....no broadband what so ever and yes the traffic for every connection is monitored.....
