MichaelNZ: It has now been about 3 weeks since this discussion, I have left the router on 24/7 and latency is still at 26-27ms to ISP. How much longer should I wait before raising a complaint?

Well, it took mine 4 weeks. You do seem to have a good line but complaint is a bit of a harsh word. It's NOT like ADSL2+ where the ISPs can request interleaving on or off and as far as I am aware, manual over-rides to the DLM are very few and far between.

Cheers - N

I agree complaint is a harsh word. I have worked in the Internet industry for several years so my usage of the word "complaint" in this context may be a bit different from how some people may understand it, but to be sure, I am not suggesting any complaint about the ISP. The request would be along the lines of whether they could retrain the line as if it were a new one.

Thanks for your response.

DLM is designed to deliver the best performance based on your line conditons. Manual requests to change profiles are pretty much ignored as they're typically not in the best interests of the customer or the network with things like UBPO which can affect other customers.

I'm not after a sub-optimal DLM profile, but after 3 weeks of not turning the router off at night (It has a fan in it), I was hoping for better by now.

Unless you're getting drastic degradation of service VDSL is set and forget - there isn't generally any request the ISP can successfully ask Chorus to do.

MichaelNZ: I have worked in the Internet industry for several years ...

Slightly surprised at this statement having read the thread, but ok.

I have VDSL2 going live at my place on Thursday, so will be interesting to see how the DLM goes.
I had coffeebaron come around and install a splitter at my place last Tuesday.....
Excellent service, and a nice guy too which is always a good thing. (free plug )

Following the splitter my ADSL2+ sync has now gone from 16mb/s to 19mb/s, so looking forward to seeing how it works out with VDSL2.

My router will be in the garage, so won't be switching it off at night.
Out of interest, what sort of router do you have? Is it worth considering one that doesn't need a fan?

It's a Cisco 887VA. A quality router with advanced configurability/specifications. Shame about having a fan though. The predesessor ADSL models didn't.

Good luck with the VDSL2. With an ADSL2+ sync of 19Mbps (which is very good) I think you will be plesantly surprised. You will probably get around 40 - 42Mbps speed test down and around 9 - 9.3Mbps speed test up.

Another thing you may want to check - if you are using a RJ12 style wall socket for the xDSL. This gives a noticable improvement over BT.

insane: At the first place I got VDSL it only took a day or so. At the 2nd place I don't think it ever made it down to the lowest latency profile, even after months, but the house wiring was shocking.

Took my current, which is my 3rd VDSL connection some weeks to get down to the lowest latency profile and its held.

Well I must have spoken too soon, after reading this thread a few weeks ago I decided to 'fix' some house wiring and disconnect all the other phone sockets which were piggy backed off the one with the VDSL2 router connected.

Sure I've now got a 5mbps higher sync rate, but at the cost of getting bumped onto a higher latency profile for the last two weeks. Tonight is Sunday so hopefully it clicks back when DLM is re-run in a few hours.

Could you please share how you found this out - that DLM would run tonight? The previously referenced information is from UKBT. While it may have some relevance to NZ, this is not to say it's identical here (in my opinion). If you have found a local source of info or noticed something yourself  I'd appreciate knowing...

In which case DLM clearly thinks you are on the most appropiate profile for your line.

Yes, it is RJ12, thanks for suggesting it though.

BTW - if you are feeling rich, you could get something like this to cut out the noise.

A BT vs RJ connector will make absolutely no difference in performance.

If you're wanting to use an RJ connector use an RJ45 anyway, RJ12's aren't standard spec for phone wiring in NZ.

Thanks, I was actually thinking mine was RJ11, but I wasn't going to argue the point.

I believe I got that originally from one of the Chorus wholesale faults guys and it's mirrored my experience, ie all profiles changes have happened on Sundays.

That's not to say that info should be treated as fact, but has seemed to be accurate to me. I haven't read 'the' long VDSL thread for a few months properly so aren't sure if others have had mid week adjustments.

OK, just got someone at work to refresh my port,

Service profile reset from :
Service Profile Name: VDSL2-DLM-2
to:
Service Profile Name: EUBAV-I-FSFS
then to:
Service Profile Name: EUBAV-F-FSFS

All in about 4 hours, so the learning process after a port refresh is fairly quick! Not sure why it shows EUBA and not VDSL for the better profiles. Checked a few other lines and theirs was the same.
