My wife is even more unsatisfied, as it's affected our gameplaying and downloading significantly. Trying to update one of my Steam items has taken about four days of her staying almost entirely offline while I try to download 6.9Gb at roughly 150-200Mb per hour. I thought I'd leave emotion out of it for the query to Chorus - we all know how far emotion gets us...

I think it's quite reasonable on Chorus part.

Have you talked to Enabled and asked when UFB is giong to be installed in that area?

Those cabinets are $100k to land, why would you bother for 40 subs for 2 years if UFB is that close?

As for your 6.9Gb, why not just pop down to the Shirley mall and download it there? You could grab most of that while having lunch.

I think that is what may have happened. I was advised at some stage during this whole long process that if I were to be migrated to another cabinet, that I would then have to be shifted over to being supplied by Slingshot's wholesale contract, as opposed to Slingshot's own gear. In my mind, there's something wrong with this supposition, as I would theoretically have had to pay that higher price throughout my time of being on Broadband Unlimited (and supplied by BUR/S cabinet and NOT directly from the exchange) yet I haven't paid that higher price. I was unwilling to pay more, as I'm already paying quite a significant chunk of my limited income, deliberately for the Unlimited factor. Call it customer loyalty if you like.

If that's the case (and it's probably worth asking the question) and you were originally on Chorus equipment, then it may be worth asking to be transferred back to Chorus gear. At 7km or thereabouts, you are right at the limit of getting a functioning connection, as you have seen. As ChorusVan has mentioned, the 400 odd meter line length increase would have a negative impact on your connection, but certainly not to the degree you have experienced.

If you can post the line stats from your modem, it should be very straightforward to confirm if this is the case.

Not completely stupidly low, just bad enough to be an issue. The weird thing is that when I first started with DSL back in 2008, I was getting initial rates of about 2.2 megabits. Ahh, those heady days when I quoted a line in my diary: "drunk on data". I'd just upgraded to DSL from dialup. Apparently now there's far more users being serviced by the exchange.

The 53dB attenuation does suggest a very long line length, so more than likely all the way to the exchange. However, the 14dB noise margin is unusual. Chorus normally set up 12dB, and the ULL providers often set lower at 9 or 6dB.

I've never even heard of Enabled (at least in the context of broadband). All I know is that UFB isn't currently installed. Heck, I don't hold out any hope of VDSL being deployed to nearby cabinets, let alone UFB.

Granted, but it still would have been nice to be able to reinstate the cabinet. However, if I get a termination 400m further down the road, and I get something like 12Mbit, I'll be happy enough. Not this pathetic 533 kilobit.

As for your 6.9Gb, why not just pop down to the Shirley mall and download it there? You could grab most of that while having lunch.

There's a small problem with that: to travel to the mall is a one hour walk pushing a wheelchair each way. It's not a short distance. I don't drive, and the taxi fare there and back isn't exactly pocket change either. This wasn't originally about my finances. In addition, I doubt that the Christchurch Council would allow me to download 6.9Gb, neither could I imagine me getting 6.9Gb in the half hour slots the library makes available for users.

And another reason? I've NO idea how to update a steam item from a computer that's not mine without having to install the steam client on the library computer system (probably disallowed, as I'd expect them to disallow executables from starting up). So no, that isn't going to be a workable plan. Pity that.

In addition, I have no criticisms of Slingshot. They seem to have tried everything they know how to do, at least for me. It's also a problem that would have affected me no matter what ISP I was with. This really lies with how my connection is configured with Chorus networks.

Where to start...

Forget about the library.

Go to Coffee Culture with your laptop and use the Telecom free wifi. It will let you have 1Gb per device per day. So that's 60Gb a month between your phone and your netbook. It's all free and it's very fast.

As for how to download and move files, no idea, ask about the forums and I'm sure someone here that's into gaming will tell you that fast enough.

You're never going to get VDSL, your cabinet is toast and there's no point with that 400m extension.

I've got VDSL on a service 30m from the cabinet and the data is already down to 45mbit from the 50mbit PIR.

Now when you say 'reinstate', what exactly do you mean? Have you actually had a close look at that cabinet? It's a 'do over' job. They've bashed it back into enough shape to keep the krone patch panels alive and pulled all the electronics out by the looks, and then used tech screws to just tie it back together. That one's not being fixed... it's a replacement.

I also wonder if it's concrete base is ok or if the mountings are bent, making it cheaper to just pull out and drop a new one in? I didn't get close enough to understand that. I'm sure it could be bashed about, but how much time that would take and what issues it might leave with water tightness, again, no idea.

Finally, isn't there still a bus service running though that area?

I set up a Wireless Hotspot in Telecom The Palms (SSID: Telecom Free WiFi) which you can access from Robert Harris next door, there are no limitations on traffic (but fair use is best) - This was over a year ago now but I'm told it's still working. Remember though, if you're going to use WiFi in a coffee shop you need to keep your cup hot and filled, this is your rent for sitting there, the suggested intake is 1 coffee every 30mins.

If you're wanting good internet see if Unleash can provide you something (Wireless or xDSL) - since they're Christchurch based they might have an option for you, call them on 0800 750 250.

Ah, sorry. I'd forgotten my term could be confused. I did indeed mean "replace with a working, perhaps scaled-down cabinet" but then I realise there's possibly only one size of cabinet. Sigh. Never mind. I meant 'reinstate' as in, reinstate working DSL. English, eh?

Definitely off topic, but very happy to state it: Finally finished downloading 6.9 Gb. That's that issue finished with, at least. And now perhaps my wife can get back onto chopping logs in Minecraft, and I can await further responses from Chorus, who have 'escalated' the connectivity issue up to relevant parties.

FYI virtually every ISAM in the Chorus network is VDSL2 capable. In the real world this means virtually every cabinet has VDSL2 including those nearby you.

Ah, I see. I hadn't fully got that from what I've read of the forums so far. Okay, so that's one less hurdle as such. But even if they roll out UFB, I'm not sure that the same constraints that hold back Chorus from installing a new cabinet at the BUR/S site don't also preclude them from installing UFB in the same area. Anyhow, time I went to check my email.

Clearly you haven't read the linked site I provided.

Chorus are not building the UFB in Christchurch, they're a competitor to it.

I would suggest that if RSC's commit suicide in Christchurch then that's it, game over.

What I'm interested to know is if Chorus will start selling us reasonable fibre access of their cabinets? (ChorusVan you might like to PM me if you have plans to do that).

No Chorus is not an arm of Enabled. I understand Chorus are interested in purchasing Enabled. Good luck with that idea. I suspect that they have no show unless Chorus is fronting with $2 billion dollars of cash (which they won't/can't).

So in Christchurch things are going to get more and more interesting.

How many of your neighbours are suffering the same problems you are?

Did ChoursVan and your RSP get back to you yet to sort out if your issue is just a line fault?

As CV pointed out, 400m shouldn't make much difference to your service with it feed from another cabinet or was it proven that your DSL is running off your providers own equipment back at an exchange?
