Nope, i don't have interleaving on.

Even with this i have high latency to the Australia, but 2 years ago it was low.

2 years ago: 67-70ms.
Now: 113-130 ms.

family member has a telecom connection, with a conservative interleaving profile set, still doesnt break 100. this is properly due in another thread though.

john, what is the testing process and the calculations for speeds weighted on? is it a min/max calcuation from tests? large enough files to test the connection fully?

ping to 27.54.94.138 (AUS) 120 ms

ping to 208.115.208.30 (USA) 201 ms

ping to 95.154.113.32 (RUS) 310 ms (But my friend on TELECOM on adsl have 201 ms to the same ip, very strange.)

but 1.5-2 years ago it was:

ping to 27.54.94.138 (aus) 60 ms

ping to 208.115.208.30 (USA) 160 ms

ping to 95.154.113.32 (RUS) 223 ms

my pings on telecom have been shocking and page load times, im glad this true net data backs this up.

as i said before, properly not the topic for it. but all bar the Russian is 20~30 ms behind my interleaved connection. which while that does support your claims latency is higher, your still missing what i said. have you checked for peering issues..

given your past posts, how about upload saturation, another possible cause of increased pings.

consider all the variables, before you start pointing fingers..

for kicks, looking at the route to the russian server, i travel via Amsterdam and france, properly not the most direct route there, however the larger increases in latancey spur once inside of russia. once again, given your posts elsewhere, that supports the idea that possibly theres a few dodgy miss configured links there.. this server hosted on a personally provided DSLAM by any chance? lawl...

all im saying, is look at everything fully before drawing too many conclusions, yes, the graph supports the claims.. but could be caused by a rather unknown variable. say for arguments sake, many of the users on telecom who had nodes on adsl, have moved to vdsl, the average point will move up as they are removed. (im not saying this happened, simply for the point of the argument. as a possible variable.)

Would be good to overlay the latency and DNS lookup times to see how long DNS queries are actually taking.

For other pings, read carefully:

About russia, you can be right.

For other pings, read carefully:
0) I'm testing pings only on clear line (without any other loads)
1) i didn't change anything in my connection last 3-4 years,
2) page loading become slower (during the years)
3) Pings become higher (during the years)

while you didnt change anything, chances are your connection went from some form of migration in that time, be it to adsl2, a profile chance on telecoms side, anything.

especially with Russia, considering the distance to travel internet wise, there is so many factors for issues. purely pinging X host, and going well theres issues there! doesnt help anyone.

in terms of the truenet report, ild assume the pings are done to an host that is rather certainly peered as to avoid any sorts of bad routes due to lack there of peering in certain locations.

John, what do you think about the recent epitiro report commissioned by vodafone that showed Vodafone has the best network in NZ on every measure? Any commentary on how that report compares to yours?

Hi,

Thanks for the interest, some quick replies:

Inphinity, yes, the number of VDSL volunteers is too low on other ISPs

Sidefx, the rate of Telecom volunteer upgrades, ie volunteers who upgrade, continues to amaze, now 12 probes

hairy1, answer supplied nicely by Inphinity

deadlyllama, Dallas, a bit further than LA

Inphinity, Volunteers are picked to be about equal in number by technology (DSL, Cable & Fibre) and 5 major cities with a scattering of other areas. I have put some maps on Facebook for a bit of info on that. We have ~400 volunteers. Routing is definitely an issue - related to peering

vexxxboy, yes but the switch from ADSL to VDSL takes time, we notice about a week between the actual switch and the impact of DLM raising the speed to it's maximum

sidefx, the numbers do make a difference, with Voyager we only have 6 VDSL volunteers, I believe we need more to smooth that out. August will be interesting with at least 9 Telecom VDSL probes

insane, an overlay of latency & DNS would be an interesting idea, best done by test run to ensure the overlay is actually related to the individual run - I'll try that

Nonprayingmantis, Epitiro use a different methodology, comparing lines to the same point on the same cable from LTP to DSLAM, forcing all lines to have interleaving off and in some cases (eg Hamilton) comparing a sample of 1 probe against each other. TrueNet uses real connections that people buy, with the consequent random line condition, random distance to DSLAM, random DSLAM and sample sizes of usually over 20, although for VDSL we restrict it to >=five probes for each datapoint.
