sbiddle: A master filter will improve your overall xDSL and may improve your download speed but won't make any difference at all to your upload speed.

Changing ISP also won't make any difference to your upload speed.

There is still some room for improvement on upload, but yes we are really only talking 50-100k. I have seen good ADSL2+ connections hit the mid 900s k for upstream (speedtest results).

The other option would be if you have someone reasonably close within line of sight who is within the VDSL or UFB area, get them connected and run a wireless connection to your place. Bit of a pain though.

Looking at 3/4g, my mobile signal fluctuates a lot, so that's probably not going to be a good solution.

hd.net.nz say i could get a 2mb upload for $300 p/m, that's a bit too much for me at the moment!

Depending on your actual use case there may be other solutions that will achieve your desired result.

For example I found myself doing a lot of development work on different OS and Virtual Machine images I would have to move back and forth across the net. My home office internet connection made this a painfully slow process as you can see from my speed-test stats below:

I ended up firing up an AWS Windows 2012 EC2 instance which I RDP into and do all my work from there. Because the server is based in Sydney and is very well connected to the rest of the world as well as NZ. (I can even stream Youtube over RDP and connections back to local sites like TradeMe can actually be faster than from my home office connection).

Occasionally I still need to move large files between my home PC and my EC2. For this I use a number of solutions that make the most of my available bandwidth at both ends including:
BitTorrent Sync
Free Download Manager
Tsunami UDP

When I'm out and about using my Windows 8 3G Ultrabook I use an application called Connectify Dispatch to load-balance my traffic over multiple 3G and Wifi connections simultaneously (I have two additional nano wifi dongles plugged into my laptop). You could also look into a Bonded Load-Balanced VPN Connection.

Thanks, that is really interesting.

I actually signed up to EC2 the other day as I was looking into using it as a render farm.

So was this easy to set, or do you have to be very tech minded?

And are you actually using a copy of your computer on the amazon server? Or how does it work?

Im using a computer supplied by the customer, so I am probably unable to do this. But maybe copying files to the server could be quicker than uploading it directly. I have to upload to a FTP site.

I'm liking the look of those speed your are getting tho!

Where you're copying it to won't improve your upstream speeds. If you're getting somewhere around 100KB/sec, that's about as good as you'll get. If you're getting considerably less than that, then the target may be part of the bottleneck.

It's not hard get started on EC2, fire one up and give it a go.

I'm using a standard amazon Windows 2012 AMI which I've setup like a Windows 8 workstation (installed MS Office, Image/Video editing software, Development IDEs and even runs Virtual Box so I can run 32-bit VM's on a VM over RDP....inception!).

Again it depends on your actual use case as to what kind of solution will best suite your need. This could end up being anything from:

- Bonded Load-balanced VPN over 3G / ADSL
- Remote Workstation
- AWS Direct Connect
- AWS Import/Export Service or similar sneaker-net

See if you have any fixed wireless operators (not over cellular) in your area.
We give all our subscribers up to 5mbit upload by default. Most WISP's are about 2mbit+

Login name, Address, Customer number or landline number.
I can see if you are Vodafone Red network or a Whole sale customer. If wholesale you are most likely on a cabinet.
There are possible profiles that we could look at to get a better upload. Possibly ANNEX-M
