I'm after some specific advice with my internet.

I have started working from home and need to upload large video and image files, but my broadband is not the best, and my upload speed is very slow.

this is actually really good for my house!

I have spoken to my ISP Vodafone, and asked about a master filter, but they said is wouldn't make a difference, and they also said that unless i get fibre (which I can't for a for few years) then I cannot get a faster upload speed. they also said that having a business account wouldn't make a difference.

I'm not sure I especially believe them, seems some people on here get some very fast speeds, and I'm a little confused about all of the different options and companies.

Which ISP seems to get the fastest speeds/is the best?
would a master filet make a difference?
What can I do to get a faster upload, is VDSL or something else viable?

I live in Devoport, Auckland, 0624.
My ISP is Vodafone
I believe I am connected with ADSL
I don't wish to move anytime soon.
Price, I'm willing to pay a bit more for a good speed, but nothing excessive.
I am willing to concede that our wiring might be crap, but I'm renting so probably not much I can do.

I appreciate any help anyone can give.

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

Does the Chorus coverage map show you're in a VDSL2 coverage area?

Your upload speeds are the maximum available on ADSL2+, changing ISP won't change this.

If you're in a VDSL coverage area (some parts of Devonport are), you can get up to 10Mbps upstream on VDSL (depending on distance to cabinet, line quality etc of course). This is your best option if your area is not Fibre-capable yet. ADSL2+ maxes out at about 1Mbps upstream, so you're close enough to that to not be able to make any viable gains on your current technology, regardless of wiring condition.

Hmmm,

From what I see on the Chorus map it says:

Network capability:

Broadband > 10 Mbps

Network upgrade scheduled:

UFB fibre up to 100 Mbps between Jul-2015 and Jun-2016

So does this mean I am just ADSL 2?

Seems I am only just about 10m out of the 20 Mbps!

Call Snap or Telecom they will be able to do a line test to determine whether you can get VDSL2, the online map is only indicative.

You will have to change ISP as Vodafone are not offering VDSL2 plans as yet.

Any recommendations for ISPs?

Telecom seem reliable from True Net, but it seems a lot of people are using smaller ISPs too.

And as our connection can be a bit iffy (phone crackles, internet drops off), would be worth while getting a master splitter/filter?

Vodafone told me it would not make a difference. But it seems to be recommend on here.

Vodafone have got Chrous to look into this, as our connection keeps dropping. So i'll see if they find anything, they didn't last time I complained.

A splitter should help and mandatory for VDSL. Splitter install will be included when moving to VDSL, otherwise if you decide to stay with ADSL or your prefer Chrorus not doing the splitter install, then flick me an email / PM.

Hmm, not looking good.

Telecom say I cannot get VDSL here.

Waiting for snap! to look into it for me, but I assume it will be the same.

So I guess I have no options for a faster upload.

But I may be able to improve my connection with a master filter (i may well contact you Coffee Baron).

And maybe a change of ISP might help marginally, away from Vodafone who seems to rank low.

Any other suggestions, or am I stuck?

Any recommendations for a better ISP?

A master filter will improve your overall xDSL and may improve your download speed but won't make any difference at all to your upload speed.

Changing ISP also won't make any difference to your upload speed.

The only other option would be if there is slingshot gear in your local cabinet best bet would be to send them a PM see if they could offer you adsl2+ with annoxm

That would offer you around double the current upload speed

Your upload speed is not any fault of Vodafone. It will not be significantly better with any other ISP on ADSL2+. The standard only supports up to 1.4Mbps upstream, and that's on a perfect line camped on top of the DSLAM. Given you're too far away to get VDSL, that's not the case with you. Sure, maybe you'll get some variation with tidying things up, but going from 850kbps to 900kbps is not a significant change. You'll get more variation in real world performance than that with time of day and congestion. ADSL is not, and never has been, a high-throughput upstream technology.

That said, a master splitter is a great idea for any xDSL installation, imo, and will likely yield some improvement, though moreso in downstream bandwidth, so I'd definitely get coffeebaron to come and sort you out.

If you really need better upstream, but can't get VDSL or Fibre yet, you could look at a business-grade symmetrical solution like HSNS or one of the varieties of wireless or 3G/4G solutions. These will all likely be a significant cost increase (or data allowance decrease) compared to ADSL.
