they should do it like they have in sweden.

run fibre across the whole country, have it set up as a Utility, just like Electricity, gas or water.

hell lets face it, its a basic need.

Why doesn't the central government buy the network, upgrade it, then wholesale it to all the ISPs (they could even make a profit).  Oh that's right, the competitors are meant to be doing all the investing - is that a Tui moment?

well actually the local government does have a share in citylink, it was the local government that actually had the network built.

And looking at my crystal ball I can see the WCC implementing this plan with money coming from our rates, and then selling the network to a big telco, and profiting of it...

no they just want to contract citylink to do it who have been providing competitive broadband to wellington businesses for years.

lugh: So if I get this right, where there aren't overhead cables (e.g. my part of Churton Park that doesn't have power poles at all), they'll potentially rip up the roads? I don't think any of this type work in Wellington have a particularly good history... lengthy delays, damage to existing infrastructure, etc.


They will probably use existing ducting where they can to stop this as digging costs more money.
Or the other option is they will use it to place utility ducting where other networks that get laid in the future will have to use the ducting where possible to minimize future digging. Many states in the US that are having fibre laid is following this approach.
