InstallerUFB: A bit of back ground info for thoses interested. The whole community @ Glinks Gully (approx 70 dewellings) is feed by 50pair (with the cableing being aerial down from the top of the hill - approx 1km). These 50prs then feed out to many small pair count local cables which feed in and around the properties.

- the photos dont show any corrosion of the cables that I can see ( they both show some rubbish hung up on the cable). The Messenger wire (the one that is molded into the side of the cable to hold it up) is actualy a high tensil cold roled galvinised wire, which is stronger than normal No8, and it is normal for the outside to corrode is salt enviroments.

Do you know how many of those 50 pairs are corroded and no longer viable?

Given its the west coast i would suggest maybe a few.

Isn't Telecom obligated under some agreement with the govt to provide a phone line?

no

i thought they were and that this was why they dont have voip yet?

Its contract says something like 'When providing a telephone service it must .....' not 'It must provide.....' -

no

The reason Telecom don't have a VoIP solution yet is because every solution they've so far tried has ended up in tears after spending big $$$

This is totally unrelated to this issue.

I had a talk to Uber's CEO this morning.
He says last time they surveyed the area, there was only 4 houses interested. They have coverage nearby and it would have been quite easy to extend it down to the valley/beachfront.

But when they found a suitable spot for the transmitter, the landowner declined because he didnt want it also serving a nearby village, or other part of the village (local politics i didnt get exact details but they dont like each other) and the 4 houses wasnt enough to warrant the huge expense.

He did say that if the community wants to re-approach them, then uber are keen to help, but they dont want to be stopped by locals and their politics as although technically easy to extend coverage, cost is still a factor.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why you can't have nice things. Some areas don't have the infrastructure for wired lines because it either makes no economical sense or it may be a plan for later when the rest of the country has been done.

An alternative exists but people aren't interested in the alternative. So there's complaints. An alternative is again proposed but someone cries NIMBY.

Fixed Wireless is by far the best option for these communities.

But only 4 houses are interested?! I am surprised they would even consider it. Going to take a bit of time to pay off the few thou they will have to drop on the required gear.

That is true, if the 4 that said they were interested are the only ones that ever use it.
It sounds like Uber was keen to put in a transmitter that would have services these properties, and by the sounds of it, another small community (from the one site) but the landowner is a Grinch.

With these things, once they are in, and people are using them and talking about them, there will be more migrate over (it has to be better than a Conklin right?)

The difficult thing is that because the lines are not subsidised like a certain other national lines provider, companies like us find it difficult to do a seasonal service as the cost of the install cannot be subsidised by a seasonal plan + contract.
To send a guy out there (120kms from whangarei) there is a large install cost and so it is difficult to get holiday home owners to pay such a cost, so we can really only budget on permanant residents.

From what I could understand is that they were keen to install the transmitter on the basis that they would hope the nearby village would be served and they could boost the subscriber numbers that way.

Even if it only required one transmitter, its still a $10k cost, and $500 to set up each household, so $12k being repaid back at $200 a month, is going to take at least 5 years before they factor in the cost of getting the data to the local transmitter, maintenance and other costs so its just not worth it for 4 households.

If those 4 households wanted to pay $2k each for an installation, that would probably work, but then you get those people thinking they can stop uber installing other clients onto that transmitter, or they can decide who uber is allowed to connect etc without realising that other households are needed to cover maintenance etc.
Just covering the solar batteries is about $1k a year.

Its interesting to note though that we have had customers switch to us who complain that they paid $2k 5 years ago to get a satellite connection installed just so they could get a 1gb monthly allowance for $80
Attitudes have changed alot and people think that broadband is a right. Once upon a time, if your wife wanted a telephone line, she would nag you until you and your neighbour went down to the post office depo and picked up a spool of cable, then loaded up your tractor put in the poles / line yourself.

There are options available to these communities but the consensus these days is "the government is bringing it to us" when they are clearly off any RBI coverage map, or "you should be paying the $12k to install the service, its our right to get it"

Ray pointed me to this post last night; and i figured i should probably just add my two cents.

To confirm what Ray is saying; if we can find a suitable site with a willing (read:cooperative) landowner we are happy to get involved and get some broadband out there. Subscriber count is definitely a factor but that said, we do have a budget for small communities like these. Historically the only thing that stops us is where we are unable to find a cooperative landowner.
