I posted about this at the beginning of the year, since then have had an order open with Telecom and waiting for a result.  Recently they have come back and still refuse to connect a phone line into our property.

The street name is Tasman Heights, Glinks Gully.  Its part of a small settlement on Northlands West Coast, about 20min south of Dargaville.  Please note this is the actual phone line im referring to, not broadband.

The neighbours around us have phone lines, some of them with broadband too!  There is no cellphone reception in this area on any of the networks, its a complete DEAD spot.

We have to drive 1km to the top of the road to get reception and even then its patchy.  As a last resort I could just connect up with a neighbour but would rather try and avoid this if possible.  Is there anything at all we can do here?  No cellphone reception, no phone line, we are basically being left cut off from the outside world.  Isn't Telecom obligated under some agreement with the govt to provide a phone line?

telecom don't connect lines any more and haven't for some time. They are just a service provider like others (voda, orcon etc).
The lines are connected by Chorus so if they are telling telecom it can't be done then they will also tell the same to other service providers.

I guess you are on some kind of wait list so you will need to investigate alternatives in the meantime.

Several people gave you advice the last time you posted this and asked you to contact them. What was the outcome of that? Was the job with the Chorus build team to add extra capacity into the area?

Ok, an update on this. I was at said location Glinks Gully for a weeks holiday over new year snd attended the AGM of section holders of which most attended. I told them we had bern declined by chorus to get a phone line and aparently Chorus has been making countless regular visits out to Glinks Gully for a multutude of faults. Corrosion the biggest problem due to the salt air being next to a wide open surf beach. The main trunk cable comming from the top of the road overhead originally had enough pairs to feed the 80 sections, and there was an agreement on this aparently when the land was made freehold back in the late 80's. Chorus have been moving dxusting customers over to spare pairs due to corrosion and the few who have broadband find the service slow and unreliable even though the cabinet is only 2.6km away. This is just appauling and I have taken photos of corrosion on the poles and whats left of a thin piece of wire holding up the main cable. Im looking forward to the next huge west coast storm to hit and hopefully with all the complaints chorus will do something? Will post photos soon.

Well with a reduced price for copper Chorus will have even of a drive to provide a long term solution for you. If they don't do anything then a wireless provider is probably the best bet. If no coverage you could see if you can get enough people to commit to it and the provider could build a repeater station somewhere around. Just use VoIP for phone.

Title of this thread does not actually reflect the actual issue, Not related to Telecom NZ at all

Hi,

In that area of Glinks i would suggest there are limited pairs available. Some houses that have recently been put in have taken up all the available pairs and over time others will degrade rendering them useless. In this case they would need an entire new cable from the all mighty conklin down the road to serve these. Given the area with not much development it isn't a high priority to upgrade the network that maybe affecting you and a handful of others. IF they said they cant do it they cant. Your best bet is to contact your RSP or "ISP" and ask if there is a build RFS or further action to connect it. If in the case they cant connect your address that is the sad truth. Your best to look at farmside from there. Attatched is a DSL map of the area. You can see there is a limited service area going back to a conklin.

Just move.

I try to ensure internet/phone services in the past when I've moved.

Im sure you wouldnt move if the property you owned was a bach/holiday house which had been passed down generations of the family.

Anyway here are the photos, the forum will not upload them for some reason and is redirecting back to the upload page again with no result and no error??? Im using chrome.  I have plonked them in my website images folder for now.

My parents just bought a bach down at Omamari beach this summer and we're loving the Kaipara coast and Kai Iwi Lakes.

Anyway, we're looking at get broadband and it seems we might be able to get it through a fixed wireless connection with UberGroup.

Coverage is looks a bit iffy for Glinks Gully but it might be worth getting in contact with Uber when they're open again on the 13th.

One on the right is a voice cabinet and left is a conklin.
But at the end of the day you are limited to how many pairs run down your street if there are even any to your house. They may have 50 ports but only 45 pairs and 50 houses to serve.

A bit of back ground info for thoses interested. The whole community @ Glinks Gully (approx 70 dewellings) is feed by 50pair (with the cableing being aerial down from the top of the hill - approx 1km). These 50prs then feed out to many small pair count local cables which feed in and around the properties.

- the photos dont show any corrosion of the cables that I can see ( they both show some rubbish hung up on the cable). The Messenger wire (the one that is molded into the side of the cable to hold it up) is actualy a high tensil cold roled galvinised wire, which is stronger than normal No8, and it is normal for the outside to corrode is salt enviroments.

Do you know how many of those 50 pairs are corroded and no longer viable?
