I've personally found Snap's support miles better than Telecoms ever was...and I was a pretty loyal Telecom customer for many years.
Regarding the Fritz box, I have the 7390 and this is certainly very capable - have had no issues with it, wifi is pretty average, but the integration of VOIP works pretty well, and includes built in answer phone with email notification of missed calls and will email voice mail messages as well - useful when you're away from home. When mine was installed the installer connected one of the analog phone ports to my existing phone wiring so that all the existing jack points in the house still work. The box also has a media server capability, and the ability to access this remotely.

I was drifting towards Snap, but the upfront (ie:router) costs will take > 12 mths to recoup. I guess the further questions are - is Snap support good enough? Is the Snap supplied router sufficiently better than the Telecom one to warrant the extra $275?
If the upfront cost is a big factor for you, then why not sign up for 24 months, and get the 7360 for free...(or $50 for the 7390 - although the 7360 should have all the functionality you need...). From what I recall of my signup you're committed to UFB for 24 months anyway so that your LFC can recoup their install costs.

If you are expecting a lot of YouTube usage then Snap is a good option, and if you go that way, perhaps the 50/20 plan would be a better option. Once you have unlimited YouTube you tend to go with HD video everytime. For us some months is only around 50, some months 150, but at least I don't need to worry about it eating into our cap.
The Fritzbox is pretty great at everything except WiFi, I use UniFi APs instead so it's not an issue for me, but something to consider. It's not horrible, it's just not as good as I wanted, although does do Dual Band which is nice. I'm not sure how that compares to the Telecom option.
If you find that your YouTube consumption is increasing, and demand for Higher Def video, and this puts a strain on your connection, simply bump to the 100/50 option.
Slightly off topic but I'm hoping Snap! get the new 7490 by time I come to renew my contract. The 7390 as others have stated is pretty average to say the least with it's WIFI. The new 7490 has wireless AC. Obviously you'll need wireless AC hardware to accompany it.

I have a longish narrow house and the router / office is at one end. I need decent wifi coverage for the family. Is the telecom TG587n any better or will I need to resort to something like airport express?

Go with a second AP for the other end of the house...preferably using some Cat6, but power line can work well, as someone has already mentioned.
My In-laws have the TG587n and it's OK - hard to tell given they're located in different houses, but I'd say there isn't much between them in terms of Wifi coverage. The Fritz definitely does simultaneous dual band, which is nice - not sure about the 587.
