Hi All,

Before I ask my question, I will say I have read as many previous threads as I could find. I know how frustrating it can be to see the same question again. However, if this has been specifically asked, I apologise.

I have just moved into a house in Masterton and the property has fibre. I am therefore trying to decide between Fibre 100 and 30. I don't want to pay for more than is required, but I do need the connection to support a few things.

1) I need to be able to remote desktop to a computer in my Auckland office without issues
2) I need to be able to have unaffected VOIP conference calls / MS Lync / Webex sessions
3) Realistic transfer of 50mb - 4GB files

My work is based in Auckland, but I'll be working from home in Masterton 2-3 days per week. I need aseamless solution.

At the same time, my family will have idevices connected for various normal net adventures, incl lots of youtube. Is there any reason I should stump up for Fibre 100? Or is Fibre 30 with sufficient data cap going to do the job?

How many people will be using it and what kind of usage profile for each one (browsing only, email, torrents)?

i reckon fibre 30 is just fine-- beats the fastest available dsl connection by around 1/3.

If 30 is not doing the business, you cna bump it up to 100.

In all seriousness I'd go for the 100. 30 is just a bit borderline but that's just my opinion. I'm sure other folk find the 30 fine.

I started on the 30 but didn't notice a huge difference over a half decent adsl line. 100 was perfect. I just got greedy when snap recently announced their 200 plan.

If you're transferring content as large as 4GB, I'd go 100 no doubt. It'll also give you a lot more headroom for connection quality when others may be streaming HD media etc (you may also want to look into QoS if the VOIP etc is that important).

Other than the business requirements I mentioned, there will be 1-2 users, mostly browsing plus lots of YouTube. I will also stream some tv and movies. No torrents though.

My personal view is go for the 30.. and if you don't find it fast enough or have issues upgrade to the 100 as it's easy to do.

any reason you are not looking at the 50 fibre plans, would seem to fit the bill.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

You will get a better improvement in choosing an ISP with good support, good investment in CDNs and International bandwidth etc than you will between 30 and 100.

Figure out who you want to do business with, then see what they offer... Most ISPs now have a pretty decent range of plans with nice high caps (or no caps)... With only a couple of notable exceptions.

As for your list of 3 main uses, Fibre of any speed will be great for them...

The ISP options in Masterton are Telecom, Snap and Vibe. I am looking between Telecom and Snap. Any thoughts on best option? Once you balance up all costs, they come back about square on costs.

i would go with Snaps 50/20 plan. It's the same price, may be even a little cheaper, than Telecoms 30/10 plan and you can add on Snaps unlimited youtube for $5

I switched to Snap when I moved to fibre, had nothing but good experiences...the big difference to me is the all you can eat YouTube ( which also includes all other Google services - eg Gmail, Google Drive) which meant we could lower our data allowance, making it cheaper overall.

As to speed, while 30 is adequate, I'd recommend 100 to speed up those big file transfers, and allow for multiple users without any conflict. Personally I'm up to 200Mbps, although my use case is a little different - and if I'm brutally honest I only really notice the upgrade from 100 when downloading large files from local caches - e.g. Steam.

Unleash is pretty good too, sure you pay a few extra dollars but for you the low latency network might be better for what you do.

Hi, unfortunately Unleash doesn't offer Fibre in Masterton. It's really telecom vs snap.

I was drifting towards Snap, but the upfront (ie:router) costs will take > 12 mths to recoup. I guess the further questions are - is Snap support good enough? Is the Snap supplied router sufficiently better than the Telecom one to warrant the extra $275?

The fritxbox is a good deal for $275 on a 12 month contract. it is different than the Telecom router in the fact that you can set up Snaps Voip service on it and Snap give support to it . that Youtube add on is a good deal , i have it and i go through 50 -80 GB a month in data , all HD videos.
