quickymart: Thread bump, this article on Scoop seems to indicate that ADSL2+ over copper should be available there now? Anyone know anything about it?

That will be over Microwave.
Not sure about ADSL it seems the Schools and Medical are first on the list so dont go counting your hens just yet.

What ever poor sole lives in that town. Thats like 10 houses. Nek minnit. Chorus satisfying FairGo and plan VDSL2 1 week later.

After reading this thread I went off and had a nosy on the chorus , I was actually surprised how many small rural townships are never getting broadband, including one of the places I lived growing up. I always thought the only people who wouldn't get it eventually would be those who were simply too far from any sort of township, way up in the wops, but apparently I was wrong.

At least ADSL is available on another relative's exchange - AU (I think) is the code. Any chance of that being upgraded to VDSL, or maybe even ADSL2+? I know it serves a tiny population, but one can only ask smile

AU Ahaura?

thoses two cabinets (AU/B and AU/D) also support VDSL, with the shapemap for VDSL within the exchange seeming rather small.

one more cabinet further up the road, which does not appear to be covered by RBI

AU = yes, Ahaura. My stepdad would love good landline broadband but I think he's too far from the exchange, so he has to make do with a T-Stick.

Where did that map come from? Very handy...is the brown area VDSL?

Does that mean VDSL is available there right now?

yes, the brown areas are VDSL, thats only with VDSL coverage showing since your question was directed at VDSL

unfortunately no.

ild personally love if it was, the day bcc died, was a disappointment having to move to that /maps one that is somewhat simplified - be it may have a bit more detail to it now that when it first went up.

I grew up in Hokitika, on the Coast and surprised BB/Fibre only goes as far as Fox Glacier and Wanaka on the Otago side.  I had no idea there was no BB in Haast, Jacksons Bay, Bruce Bay or Paringa, but our maps support that (just POTS).  Having driven along there even just a couple of years ago I know how rugged it is.  But also the possibility of Chorus' new Microwave Digital Radio Links and working with local communities to co-fund infrastructure upgrades.  Although I have no official info about South Westland.

Chorusnz: With no fibre going into Haast, Chorus has no plans to upgrade broadband there.
Teamtalk signed a contract with MBIE to deliver upgraded broadband to Haast and is looking to use radio backhaul.
Give the folks at Teamtalk a call.

^GL

Yes they are currently building a licenced network down the mountains from Greymouth to Haast school, then onto Jacksons Bay etc I believe.

They should be in a position to supply ADSL or Wireless within 6 months all going well.

It is actually Araneo not Teamtalk contracted to MBIE. Teamtalk owns Araneo/Citylink/Farmside.

Give them a call for more info.

Hmmm...I wonder if my relatives on the Ahaura exchange can get VDSL? I would guess not.

Slightly off topic here, but...my stepdad is 6kms from the exchange (I think) and he barely got ADSL when he had it. Phone line always poor quality there (even for voice). Lots of pops, clicks, hums. The line to his house goes across one of his paddocks. Is there anyway the cable could be undergrounded, and would it improve the quality of his landline?

Strange...according to your map above one of my relatives should be able to get VDSL, but when I enter their address into the address checker on the Chorus website they can't?

It's unsurprising really. It's not economic for Chorus (or any other provider) to install very expensive backhaul to small rural townships if there will never be enough return on investment to recoup the costs.
