I have a cousin who is considering relocating to Haast in South Westland for work reasons. He was asking me what broadband options are available there. I've never visited the place myself, but I understand none of the mobile networks have any coverage there, so mobile broadband is out.

Is ADSL available? Punakaiki (a little further up the Coast) has a much smaller population yet they can get ADSL there, I think by way of Nokia equipment? (I could be wrong on that one) - so I would hope that ADSL could be supplied, as it's done by population? Or have I got it wrong and he's probably out of luck?

If no ADSL is available, does anyone know if anything is planned for the area?

looking at coverage maps, there is an exchange in the area, but that its it. as far as i can tell, not even a dsl service leaves that exchange.

hate to say it, but it looks very much like a dead zone.

onwards with the dialup eh?

Take a look at the chorus broadband map - you can put in an address and it will tell you what is available. Why not do it and put a print screen here?

Get the bloody sandflies to carry messages. They are big enough.

Im not from the coast but looking at the plans for the area (Haast to Jackson Bay) the area is feed via a series of radio huts/cabinets (the Exch appears to be just a cabinet housing now) some of them may be ADSL capable via conkins, on there own 2meg link but I cant see any and judgeing from the chorus map I would say no.

Looking via google earth and websites etc the motel/s, backpackers, hotel etc all apear to have dishes for satalite internet

With no fibre going into Haast, Chorus has no plans to upgrade broadband there.
Teamtalk signed a contract with MBIE to deliver upgraded broadband to Haast and is looking to use radio backhaul.
Give the folks at Teamtalk a call.

Ack. No worries. Thanks all...
Yes I realise it's more than "a little way away" but I was using it as a population base comparison in the same area :)

I suspect the initial focus of the Team Talk solution will be the school and medical centre, but you might be able to able to buy into services from one of these sites. There are two satellite broadband services available - Farmside based on IPstar and NZ Wireless based on Optus products but both will require installation fees and at least a 12 month contract. Having driven the coast last month, there is no cell coverage south of Fox and Ip Star dishes are everywhere...

A pity. I thought they may have laid cable of some sort down the western side of the SI, maybe to provide redundancy with Canterbury/Otago or something?

There is a loop up via Nelson and then through either Arthur or Lewis pass into Canterbury but not fibre that far south and west.
Seems crazy to me fibre is not laid at least that far south but then I'm not a network planner

Interesting. I think they can get broadband at the glaciers, I would have thought it wouldn't be that much of a stretch to extend the cable (or whatever) down to Haast? Then again, it might be...

Yes there is broadband in the glaciers but from there on down, only voice circuits (with some radio links in the path) going south. There is 3G in Fox so backhaul is available for Vodafone / Telecom.

That final gap to Haast multiple one lane bridges, and the storms a couple of Christmases ago highlights the vulnerability of infrastructure is on the coast. Ie providing diversity of any kind is very expensive and not seemingly done often.

Thread bump, this article on Scoop seems to indicate that ADSL2+ over copper should be available there now? Anyone know anything about it?
