What sort of bandwidth saving does a proxy cache tend to give these days? I've seen ~500-1000 users on a network with only an average of 5% savings - so much is HTTPS these days.

Can anyone offer up some numbers?

It depends on content, CDN content is usually not encrypted, such as games from Steam.

Orcon offers unlimited Business VDSL (Its not on the website for some reason, but we do offer it).

Fairly good pricing too.

Yabanize: You might be fine with one vdsl connection, Your connection will probably be around 70 down and 10 up judging by how good your ADSL is. Remember thats around 3 times faster. You could also rate limit each user so they cant steal all the bandwidth. Is there no fibre available?

No there is no fibre available for up to 15 months.

That's not what I've been told by one of the major ISPs, maybe it was Slingshot? They would not supply a residential unlimited VDSL residential plan to our business. The others might be different.

But even on vdsl with 50 tennants you are going to see a lot of slowdown. Why can't they just have their own connections?

They only have ethernet ports in their rooms. In fact they used to be phone ports but they were changed over.

Zeon: I wouldn't recommend hd.net (look for "hosting direct" in these forums - same place/guy).

I have already done some googling on Hosting Direct. Some interesting stories out there, not just on this website. But mostly quite a while ago.

Zeon: Go with a business plan also so you get a higher service lvel - even if it is mroe expensive.

Thanks for that advice, I have just signed up for the Orcon unlimited VDSL business plan. I'll have to look into the fairer sharing.

Zeon: Also look at your router and get a setup which allows fairer sharing of bandwidth.

bbqroast: 1TB for 50 users is only 20GB each, which is hardly greedy.

I'm guessing there are a few hogs and mostly normal users, but I'm having trouble finding out.

How is internet delivered to tenants in the building? Is it one big Wifi network or do they each have individual ethernet ports.

There is an ethernet port in every room, and 3 Wifi access points, 1 on each level. It seems most people use the APs, which aren't really up to it. Ethernet can sometimes be 10x faster than an AP with too many stations connected. So I am upgrading them to simultaneous dual band.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

I agree, that is why I am trying to improve it. But it is free and unlimited!

That sounds really expensive, and we will be getting fibre installed for free, possibly as soon as June 2014.

I think (don't quote me on this) the only cost to you is to house the cabinet, it's pretty complex and I recommend you talk to an expert about it because 50+ tenants makes it economical for chorus to consider it.

Ah right. Well then I guess your tenants will have to settle for slow(er) internet connection then.

As you are going down this route I would recommend buying a router that has good quality control so that your tenants will receive fast Web browsing even when the connection is saturated.
