considering no LOS, and a bit of distance, you might be pushing it to get anything overly fast..

I'm on a 2.3Mbps connection, I think even 10-15Mbps down would be lovely.

I told you a speed - up to 20 to 30Mbps symmetrical. Speeds and caps are going to depend completely on the economics of such a deployments and the number of customers.

Since you can't see the school the discussion can stop here anyway since there is no chance of such a solution for you. This type of solution is going to work in areas where there is no or very poor broadband, not somewhere that has broadband.

If you can persuade a neighbour to share their faster connection you could do a point to point wireless connection with $300 worth of gear, but in reality this is not likely to happen unless you can get your olds to buy into the idea that you need a faster connection.

The speeds you have are perfectly adequate for general use and adequate for gaming I would think. Be grateful it is reliable. Friends of ours moved to an area they were told (by people in the area) they could get broadband, but it turns out they are only just too far from the cabinet. 3G coverage is available 50m up the road from the new house. With all of the the electric fences in the area the dialup performs badly.

Internet isn't consistent. Sometimes it's 2.3 sometimes it's 0.8 and sometimes 1.6:/

My dad has said if there are no alternatives then we will switch to Compass and their 10/3 plan(which isn't too bad and it will be 100GB a month)

Although I suspect had my cousins not lived with us and used the internet as much as I do then speeds wouldn't fluctuate as much. Like last year when they weren't with us, sure it wasn't great but it was ok and was fairly consistent.

Yeah gaming is kinda difficult. When it's around 2.3 Mbps it's nice but any lower and it's laggy

i gamed a bit while i was out last weekend (on the connection i pasted earlier.), was a solid 60MS except for when downloading.

not quite the 28ms i get on my VDSL, but it was consistent.

your issue sounds a bit like saturation.

If at all possible, find someone with a WiMax connection and give it a try before you buy and get some feedback. Client of mine got it to replace dodgy ADSL a few months ago, but they are not exactly raving about it - both performance and reliability (short term dropouts a few times a week). Perhaps ask in that forum.

That's a good idea actually... but it would be expensive. My dad wouldn't see the point in that.

If at all possible, find someone with a WiMax connection and give it a try before you buy and get some feedback. That's a good idea actually... but it would be expensive. My dad wouldn't see the point in that.

ild look at it this way, if overusage is through the roof, and your likely to download alot, then your not gonna mind your connection pegging at 2MBit all day long pulling a update for example..

its all about management, as wireless plans are often pretty costly..
