Wondered when the next lot of rubbish would be coming. Didn't PF release the same thing just before they threw it in

Thats the gift that keeps on giving. High end DC, Only meters above sea level, not much further away from the south pacific ocean with few obstructions. Plonked down the road from a major refinery with onsite lox plant which is next door to a huge wood processing plant. On a spot  5-10k's away from any single fibre backbone, All done in Northland who's power overall is pretty bad

If it's such a bad location why are they even considering it?

Because it's a location where they can do the whole thing with other people's money.
A chunk of that money's likely to come from the Northland taxpayer through the NRC.
The Northland Regional Council has it's fingers in all the pies in that area.
They're a controlling shareholder in North port which owns all the nearby land, they run Northland inc, which Colin Mitten has just quit... they have an investment fund full of taxpayer's money which is burning a hole in their pockets.
And.. right now the govt.s investigating dissolving the NRC completely and devolving it's responsibilities to the 3 diztri t councils..

Well if this flops, perhaps Subpartners APX-East will be third time lucky?

Not holding my breath for any of them.

Bugger extra bandwith, speedwise, things are probably never going to change. With UFB, the internet's as fast as it's going to get for now, and a new cable isn't going to make things any "faster" Although it may make ISPs, lower their prices to the end user, as I'm sure with the two cables in hot competition, bandwith prices will be slashed.

Another thing nobody seems to have mentioned, I may be mistaken but we are one of the few, if not the only civilised country that relies on a single international link, to the rest of the civilised world. Also, there's the fact, that the cable to come ashore in NZ from the US, has to go through some trouble hotspots in the Pacific, ie Fiji, which is essentially a dictatorship, and any major dispute, and they could cut the cable. (Not likely, but not unlikely either)

Yes, there's the Australian leg of the SX cable too, but even if that side should remain online, the results of having the cable's main hop from the US, to NZ damaged or sabotaged would be catostrophic, not just for NZ, but our "mates" over the ditch too, on that note a few years ago (07) there was a storm, which knocked out the USA/NZ route, and emergeny repairs had to be carried out, then an undersea earthquake which damaged the cable again a few years later, but thankfully service was uneffected because of safety features within the cable.

Point is, is that unless something massive had to knockout both cables, communications to NZ, would be undisrupted compaired to if the SX cable had to get knocked out again.

The SCCN cable sections connected to NZ are connected to Australia and Hawaii. Neither go through Fiji.
I'm all for more cables out of NZ. It's not going to suddenly make end user internet connections here 50% cheaper, but competition and redundancy in routes out of the country can only be a good thing.

From this I can predict one thing.
In two weeks and 1 day we will see a story "Southern Cross Cables announce price drop for international data"

So that will mean we almost have two cables confirmed - remember Vodafone/(telstra)/telecom are still building the link across to aussie
Or did that get canned too?
