CYaBro: And there's also this planned for Whangarei.
Thats the gift that keeps on giving. High end DC, Only meters above sea level, not much further away from the south pacific ocean with few obstructions. Plonked down the road from a major refinery with onsite lox plant which is next door to a huge wood processing plant. On a spot 5-10k's away from any single fibre backbone, All done in Northland who's power overall is pretty bad
Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.
CYaBro: If it's repd location why are they even considering it?
Another thing nobody seems to have mentioned, I may be mistaken but we are one of the few, if not the only civilised country that relies on a single international link, to the rest of the civilised world. Also, there's the fact, that the cable to come ashore in NZ from the US, has to go through some trouble hotspots in the Pacific, ie Fiji, which is essentially a dictatorship, and any major dispute, and they could cut the cable. (Not likely, but not unlikely either)
Yes, there's the Australian leg of the SX cable too, but even if that side should remain online, the results of having the cable's main hop from the US, to NZ damaged or sabotaged would be catostrophic, not just for NZ, but our "mates" over the ditch too, on that note a few years ago (07) there was a storm, which knocked out the USA/NZ route, and emergeny repairs had to be carried out, then an undersea earthquake which damaged the cable again a few years later, but thankfully service was uneffected because of safety features within the cable.
Point is, is that unless something massive had to knockout both cables, communications to NZ, would be undisrupted compaired to if the SX cable had to get knocked out again.
