cheers aredwood, both corded and cordless do ring once, it is happening now and it is 1 degree outside even at 9.30 ( lucky me), dsl stats are all good so I guess the cables may be too close and been interfered with. Anyway its happened since the home was built in the late 90's, so the riple control would seem highly likely.

It's odd that you are getting one ring without an incoming call being cutoff. You do get transients but most phones are designed to ignore them as part of the dial pulse rejection in the ringer. Is there any regular pattern apart from temperature?

only happens when it is close to, or freezing outside.
