The white box on the pole is an etp that wi house a joint to convert the aerial to underground ..

Vdsl seems to work a bit better in the rural areas sometimes cos they use a bigger cable diametre - but tbh not much you can do re routing the 049 up the drive

Any reason a POE ethernet link via the conduit (if found) wouldn't be a best and cheapest method?

At roughly 200m, even with an extra switch midway, a gigabit router and cat5e should easily manage the distance?

Pretty sure it wont be in conduit due to the length of it -

is that general practice for such a distance?

ild wait for the next tree to comedown and a rough dragging to snag it! ;)

is outdoor grade cat5 designed to be weathered that much?

To further that, when you say outdoor grade, do you mean the Gell Filled version or just any outdoor grade?

if so, thats probably a good solution! (assuming no conduit as if its there, may aswell use it)

I personally use this myself with outdoor jobs (rooftop AP's) - http://www.ubnt.com/accessories/toughcable/

It is pretty annoying to crimp (use their ends too) however it is pretty tough and ridged.

Generally anything over 60m in rural sections won't be in conduit.

Dragging a Cat 6 through would be an option I suppose - provided you can get your cable run down to 100m (ish).

And yes you probably want the hardcore, double sheathed, gel filled, uv stabilised (very important) outdoor cable for anything that will be there for a decent amount of time.

I use the gel filled stuff. It's pretty weather proof etc, but obviously not totally indestructible if a tree came down on it. I guess you just work out the best path to run it through the bush.

Doesnt look badly priced at all along side Gell Filled too.

Any Recommend place to get it from? otherwise looks like gowifi do it.

yeah, ild say we would look at snaking it a little, run it down the far side as it is a bit more sheltered from damage, until the near the top.

suppose the advantage of laying it down, is its easy to replace if need be..

Out of Gelled or the "Toughcable" which would be better for a cable thats likely to be battered around a little - Ild probably look a burring it atlest enough that its not obviously in harm, from say, a kid running around... which would probably cover any trees too.

Yup, buried even just 10-20cm shouldn't be too hard to do at tis time of year, and should cover the UV factor AND the kid running/tree falling scenario... Though prolly worth marking the trail, and don't forget to cost the POE aspect and the midway ’booster' switch you'll need to get over the 100m limit for Ethernet?

Good thing is your drive entrance would then be the effective intake point for the VDSL, and all distance thereafter would be zero impact on the speed.

I wonder if the 50m I could cut off my drive would also be worth trying this for... Especially as I don't need the POE or midway switch to do so, and have a prequal of only 10db anyway.... Hmm...

considering its a VDSL link rather than a Ethernet link, the 100M limit for Ethernet does not matter if im not mistaken.

lookup the spec sheet on the VDSL POE mentioned on the first page, says its good for 500M IIRC

for 50M, i dont think that really matters... but 200M gets to the point of considering.. and im making the assumption it goes direct. - memory is a little bit patchy as i didnt really take much notice, but pretty sure the ETP was moved a tad since some "alterations"

EDIT:

Mobotix MX-2 wire was the vdsl extender..

Ah i see you were referring to your suggestion of a switch in the middle as a "booster"

Ild assume reliability and the extra power draw comes into it? can you even "booster" when using PoE? would the power in it not be degraded?

not to mention your adding a point of failure.

PoE is one thing i have not played with as of yet.. so im not up on the ins and outs of it..
