With an upcoming RBI upgrade, where VDSL will be available for a family members place, looking at if i can do anything to help things out a bit..

The driveway is close on 200M Through pretty dense bushland, so a sizable distance when your talking a VDSL signal

Mapped out here is approximately the layout of the drive, ill have to give it a proper measurement in the car next time im up there, but its close enough to the map reading.

So, What crazy ideas does geekzone have, if any, for this?

before a P2P wireless link crops up, there is no way line of sight will get through, unless we go on a major culling of trees!

Not sure of if there is conduit available going up there or not (alot of the place was done cow-boyish by the previous owners), will have to get that checked too.

Might be possible to look at something like that, what sort of power draw is required?

Heres what we have terrain wise "at the gate" if it helps too.

its something i have hummed and harred over for quite some time, thing is... shortening the loop as long as it is currently, on adsl would net next to no profit, but on a higher speeds ADSL connection, or VDSL comes on with the switch to the cabinet, the results are considerably more favourable...

in the intern, im sure they would enjoy the little jump none the less..

You could power it over the copper lead-in.

Reality is you'll be looking at around $700 - $1k for hardware depending on what you go for. Something like a Mobotix MX-2 wire and then a 802.3af to AT adapter and power adapter for the modem would work fine.

was somewhat expecting there would be something in bulk upfront

To make sure i have the concept, this would power modem and then push the data down the MX 2 wire?

An analogue phoneline would not work in this case, as the POE is taking up the pair, so going to VOIP or something would be the route to be going for that?

A lead-in has 2 pairs so it'd work fine.

The only issue is the lead-in cable is owned by Chorus, not the home owner. A theoretical solution and actually deploying this in the real world could be 2 very different things.

This is a point i did not think of.

Will have to double check that the leadin defiantly goes all the way to the house (as i mentioned before, i have a suspicion dodgy has been done along the way), but assuming it does and there is conduit. then surly it wouldnt be too hard to push/blow a cable up there so its "not messing with chorus's lead in"

Although, that would still be shortening the leadin at the end of the day, would that not come under the same sense as re-purposing it like proposed?

What was that white box three quarters of the way up the pole in the photo?

thus is why i need to get up there and check that out at some point... it looks very much like an ETP, and i have often questioned it myself but never gotten around, to wanted to lugg a ladder all the way up there!

probably check the house end first, since thats easy to get to... send someone else up the ladder at the end of the drive to take a peek into there.

Theres a closer picture, can only go off google maps till i pop up there and get some proper photos.

Is the lead in necessarily owned by Chorus? Doesn't the developer / home builder often get these laid themselves?

does this possibly come under being more of a grey area rather than black and white then?

No matter who laid the service lead as soon as it connected to the Chorus network it is theirs and they become responsible for it.

In saying that.... I don't see you have any trouble using the second pair. As long as it is completely disconnected from the Chorus network they are never going to know what's happening down that end.

The main issue you face is the price for doing this.
Allied Telesis do a VDSL LAN extender for about $300 per end. Then you need your power supply to run up the cable - I would be inclined to just pump 48V up to the gate and then regulate it at that point down to what you need for the modem & VDSL extender. Then you need a decent waterproof enclosure. So could easily hit the $700-800 mark quickly. Is it really worth the extra 5-10Mbps?

Being that its Rural vdsl Near the tail end, with a rather limited amount of electric fences along the way (off the top of my head, i cant count a single one actually), i see it as likely being the difference between a decent connection, and the possibility of it being "non viable"

200M is a lot when your talking about VDSL after-all.

Regardless, the point of all of this is to discuss the possibility of doing something so atlest an informed decision can be looked at and discussed.
