Within a few hours 1200 people signed up, thats approximately $96000 more revenue for Orcon per month! Obviously Kiwis are responding to such specials so it'll be interesting to see how Orcon can attract even more!

Also in regard to a few of the other posts here...could you guys have gotten more off topic with your phone porting whatever it is? Where are the moderators...:(

The posts re. porting numbers were entirely relevant, seeing as transferring a Telecom line is part of the bundle.

I was saying Orcon don't offer number portability at the moment (ie move a Clear/WXC/etc Number to Orcon Network. What Orcon do is wholesale the line from Telecom. If you have a Line which has been moved (Number Portibility) to say a VOIP provider (moved it off Telecom Copper) such as WXC, Slingshot etc Orcon can't (yet) move it to be billed via Orcon (as its not attached to a Telecom Copper Based Line)

Thanks

nzmodel: The savings not only enticed me to join Orcon but they seem to have the infastructure and 100% kiwi owned attitude to go far. The speed at which they will install their own equipment to deliver us with maximum speeds should be faster than that of Xnet to. (Considering there was no mention of them in the news with Orcon and Ihug).

It's my understanding that Xnet are not interested in wasting money in putting their own equipment to compete with the big 3.
They already provide an excellent service on telecom's equipment without any of the risks of investing in equipment which may sit idle with 3 companys providing equipment (and I see no reason why orcon and ihug won't compete with telecom wholesale to try and get Xnet's customers connecting through their equipment to improve their economies of scale)
Xnet are far more focused on naked DSL and their vfx service as an alternative to telecom's POTS (which currently looks like it'll save it's internet customers about $20 a month (plus the cost of call fowarding, call minder, caller display, call waiting)

Part of the business model adopted by many large providers overseas who have installed gear is to wholesale their services as well and this is something I can see happening here as well. Small ISP's will probably have a choice of wholesale circuits from Telecom and potentially TCL, Orcon and Ihug/Vodafone. This can only be good for competition.

1200 people? Where'd you get this number from? Also geekgirl's question was relevant, it's a service Orcon should be providing, but, for whatever reason, are not. Sigh.

An interesting conversation here. I thought about Orcons offer but then decided not to. I am with Xnet for my broadband and I also am one of their 5000 customers on their VFX voip phone service. Like most if not all of the VFX customers I am waiting for NDSL so that I can get rid of my POTS line. Orcon are going to have to start from scratch when they release their voip service so this is how they are building up their potential customer base within a relatively short time to do it in. When NDSL does kick in those 5000 odd customers will probably then get offered Orcons service called digital voice and scrap their POTS forever. I am very pleased with the Xnet VFX service as all calls I make on it do not get added as accountable traffic as far as my data cap is concerned and it is quite surprising in a month how much data is used on voip calls. In time though Telecom are going to scrap the POTS service completely and then everyone whether they are on the internet or not will be on a voip service. Also that number of 1200 new customers to Orcons service on Saturday is right I read the article about that too. The signup is done online not through their operators.

Just because it's in the media doesn't mean its true... Sounds like bs to me - but I could be wrong Tongue out

Anyway, the deal seems relatively good, but as someone else mentioned, I'd be very careful calling it "free". Also, the lack of flexibility bugs me. Something like "Buy any broadband plan over $50, plus any talk easy plan, and we'll give you a free homeline" would've been much better.

Orcon have got a lot of catching up to do, and IMO they're trying to do too little too late. Maybe with Kordia's backing and network though, we might see some decent moves out of them yet...

i'm disappointed with this offer after looking through and doing the sums. currently paying $97 per month for phone line and broadband. $55 to telecom including call waiting, call minder and wiring/maintenance. $42ish to orcon for broadband with a 5gb cap. total round about $97. tolls are with orcon but i mainly call mobiles.
orcon's offer = if i sign up for the call minder etc wire maintenance package = $95! so a much larger data cap for the same price. think i'll wait and see what else comes along.

Lol so you wouldn't want an extra 15GB of data to download or upload?

Also, why pay $55 to Telecom whos money goes overseas to people exploiting us when you can give it to Orcon who are 100% New Zealand and trying to make a difference?

Yea I admit XNET is good but Orcon is the bigger player so will likely have more money to roll out the higher speeds. Surely if your local exchange was unbunbled through Orcon and could deliver 24mbps download speeds for less than the price of your XNET 2mbps broadband you'll switch to Orcon? (Vice versa I know but Orcon is likely to do it faster).

Why would it matter if the media lied or not? It seems the Herald promotes Vodafone more (1GB free broadband and thats mentioned first in Peter Griffins blog...) than Orcon...

Just go with the flow, tell Telecom to shove it (god I love ringing up customer services n givin them ****) and switch.

You do seem to conveniently leave out all the jobs Telecom generate, both within Telecom and external contractors, Tax that flows back though the economy and various investments. Like Telecom or not they have a role to play, and a large sum is put back into the economy, defiantly more than Orcon.

So what was your argument again?

Nope. First mentioned in my blog at http://www.geekzone.co.nz/freitasm/3496 a week before and discussed here on Geekzpne forums - including responses from Vodafone.

I think she(i think, sorry if i'm wrong :P)  meant that the order in the article was about Vodafone, then Orcon, not that Peter G was the first to write about the Vodafone offer.

like it or not telecom own the infrastructure that has and will continue to bring me the internet. Orcon and Vodafone are interested only in making a profit (they've been free to install their own equipment and wiring all along) while telecom are obliged to provide a service (which is not without flaws but is far beyond what I expect Orcon or Vodafone will ever offer me).
Maybe Vodafone gets more media coverage because it has the money to do things quicker than Orcon (ihug got some actual equipment in the exchange while orcon had only a painted metal face plate)
I'm sure everyone would be happy to join orcon for a 24Mbps connection with 10gb of international and free national traffic for less than $42.95 but I wouldn't hold my breath

Actually, I'm pretty sure the Ihug cabinet was empty.
