I can only hope that they find a way to run it along my old telephone conduit because it'll look like one hell of a mess otherwise (my backyard is all concrete).

Cbfd: Some of the ruggardise stuff ive seen is pretty tidy , but i can see why this is being done though and understand why

There isn't one good thing about that rugged stuff unless it is buried 400-600mm in the ground.

Running stuff along fence lines has always been a temporary measure to get service to people while a permanent solution is thought through.

I just can't for the life of me figure out how this was approved as a good install technique. I would assume this wasn't up to one single person and that Chorus must have an entire product team who decided on this. I can only assume not a single person in that team has ever worked on the network a day in their life and that they are just accountants.

Nope. People just don't realise their install is bad.

The only installs I would consider 'good' are the ones that are underground from street to house.

What amazes me is, assuming there is $3,000 install allowance per house - how on earth would such a half assed job end up costing $3,000?

I suspect that average install cost of $3k is now coming down substantially that trenches aren't being dug. That is where all the cost is and what Chorus wanted to remove when they came up with rugged ribonet.

With our install the Chorus techs removed the concrete pavers and dug under that, put some PVC pipe in and covered it up. Unless if you were really looking you won't know where the fiber entry in the house is or that we've even got UFB and there are no traces of them even running fiber. They also ended up getting a company to re-lay the pavers professionally. The ONT and ETP is installed near the back of our house.

I should qualify my statement with, I'm kinda glad my install fell through because they were talking about digging up 20m of driveway without explanation, and then digging up both mine and my neighbour's non-shared driveway, future-proofing it with joints and all this crap, and then talking about how the corrugated steel on the outside of my house was a problem. I could see this job going bad really fast from the way the tech was talking on the first visit, and with the lack of communication between the RSP and me and the RSP and Chorus, I would expect to wake up one morning and find they'd started digging up the driveway without telling anyone.

So with all that in mind, I'm kinda glad my install fell through now. :P

Yeah, tarmac shared driveway with a 90 degree bend, gravel driveway on our property, and kerbing at the edges of the driveway. So that kind of install wasn't an option.

Everything was a problem to them.

Me, I'm just glad that $1.5bn of taxpayer's money is universally being spent on such professional installs backed by a rigorous process.

That is totally unacceptable!
What happens when the fence needs replacing?
Have they forgotten that this network should last minimum of 40-50 years? And that the buried copper will be removed?
Don't even mention vandals, or new owners of the property who think it is some old Cable TV relic and want if off the fence.

I agree with you. BTW, there's a primary school at the end of this particular street. I suppose that exposed black cable will be tempting for at least a few of the kidlets to tug on. undecided

I won't mention our neighbors shared tarmac driveway that got the same treatment we got then ;) you can only slightly tell where they've dug the 30m of tarmac and relaid again.

Or blows over in strong winds etc.... who'd be responsible for sorting out the cabling ? Doubt Chorus/contractor would put their hand up.....

Haha, touche!

I just wish it could be guaranteed to be consistent. Whether or not some actual process kicks in when stuff has to be dug up, I don't know, and no one is telling. So it ain't happening. When we do the new build, we'll be paying to lay our own future proofed cabling and try and cut out Chorus as much as possible.

Yep that would be fun; owners of the fence would be liable to Chorus for damage to the network, have to use their insurance.
Although given that they are doing 'free' installs, they'd probably just replace it for free anyway.

Yeah probably not such a big deal for new builds, as all should have ducts put in to the boundary anyway which avoids this kind of problem (it has to be using their green ducting, to a suitable external termination point)

Nah, we don't get strong winds in Palmy...
