Oh, BTW. I was DSE today and saw this beautiful red cat6 cable for $1, and I am so itching to lay some between computer point and somewhere near the ETP. The only reason I resisted was advice from here to let the install guys do their job, but I mean... This cable was bright red, and kind of shiny :-)

Probably a flexible patch cable so best to leave it on the shelf at DSE.

DSE no longer sell anything as useful as Cat6 cable off the reel - what you saw had to be a patch cable - useless for your needs..

Honest Injun. This was in Blenheim where Dick Smith is still pretty old school. It was a big cardboard box at the back of the shop with cable coming out of one side. There must of been hundreds of meters of it. It said Cat 6 on the box, it was about 5mm diameter, and while I am not absolutely sure how many cores, it said they were solid, and they were obviously twisted from the feel of the cable. It was sold at a dollar a meter.

I just feel the need to be proactive, and I'd feel bad if the installer had to navigate around all the stored treasure (junk) in our loft space.

Installers often use hybrid Cat6 / fiber cable to future-proof the connection.
The cost of the cable is included in the installation - why pay for it twice?
Just let the installer do his job - they love navigating around stored treasure

I've compromised, and when I started poking around, it turned out to be a much easier job than expected. I found a redundant coax cable taking the exact route I planned to run the cat6 (the first part at least) so I have made that easy to get at to use as a pull through. My treasures have been moved out of the way, and the whole process should not take more than twenty minutes.

Oh, and I found some long forgotten treasure that was bought down and put into use. I swear there are boxes up there unopened from when we moved here ten years ago!

I think I saw Bunnings wanted $1.50 a metre for Cat5e off the roll.

OK, so the Chorus man has been and gone. In the end I couldn't help myself, and I ran the cat6 yesterday. It was worth it just to see the smile on the installer's face when he saw he had an easy job. He was fairly sure that the cable from the cabinet would have run down one side of our cul-de-sac and up the other, so the 13.9db downstream attenuation works out about right.

I don't know why, but some of the modem stats actually look worse, with the upstream attenuation being way up.

Don't worry, be happy ...

VDSL attenuation figures are higher than ADSL attenuation figures, because they are measured at higher frequencies.

Yep, ild say the chorus tech was correct with how your cable runs.

for your line stats, your sync rates are pretty good :)

just leave DLM to do its thing now!
