Lorenceo: I'm quite partial to Tomato myself. Biggest issue I've found with Tomato on the R7000 is IPv6 doesn't work properly.

Thanks, I tried both firmware this weekend and ended up using Tomato by shibby.
DD-WRT has heaps of problems with R7000, and biggest one is random reboots (I can confirm this first hand) and you have to fiddle around with command line to fix the problem.

Changed to Tomato and 0% problem so far.

Wireless coverage seems to have taken a big hit with both firmware. Barely getting any signal at all upstairs. Used to get solid 11ac.

zyo: Quick question, to connect the ATA point on ONT to the house phone line, do you get charged for that? Or only connection between ONT to the router? Additionally do Chorus use standard Ethernet module so they fit my existing wall faceplate?

There is no aditional charges for instaling a conection from the ATA port back to your esisting phone wireing. Generaly a single RJ45 (dual if you are with Spark) is connected to the end of hybrid cable (both Cat5 & 2 Fibres) that is run from the ETP to the ONT, to endable the ATA port from the ONT or RGW, to be back fed to the ETP and on to your existing wireing - this is done at the time of the install.
Chorus currently provide to the installers a wall mounted box to house the Keystone RJ45 Jack/s - though the jack/s could be fitted into a standard PDL face plate (end user would be charged aditional for the additional hardware - or provide the addaptors and faceplate themselves)

What about power points? I want to put a distribution panel in a storage room and have ONT and my router/obi VOIP in there, it currently houses my security alarm control panel so I know there is power, but I think Chrous requires a power point with at least 2 outlets? Can the Chorus guys do that (with fees I suppose)

I don't think so, because Chorus techies aren't electricians.

Lorenceo: FYI, the Netgear R7000 doesn't support VLAN tagging on its stock firmware. If your ISP requires it (most do) you'll need to set something else up to do the VLAN tagging between the ONT and R7000, or install custom firmware on the R7000.

As to how to set it all up, if money were no object I'd have CAT6 run to every room for fixed devices, all back to a central point with a switch, patch panel and the ONT.

If the patch panel is central within the house, I'd put the router in there too. Otherwise I'd run two cables from ONT to a central point within the house for the router. One to connect the router to the ONT, and one to connect the switch to the router.
Depending on the size of the house, it could be worth looking into putting separate APs in some of the rooms rather than using the router as the AP.

Latest Netgear firmware update has added VLAN support. I can confirm it's available in R7000 now.

I bought a Dynamix 18inch Wall Mount Enclosure with a slim 8 port patch panel module at the end. I am only going to house the ONT, EdgeRouter Lite and a Obitalk Voip box inside so can't really justify spending more than 200 on this thing.
