coffeebaron: Approx. where are you? I.E. road / near (don't post exact address). Looks like a mix of RBI DSL and DSL1 around the place, so your speeds may not be good for consistent VoIP.

If voip is not an option, then it would be possible still.
1) Get a line from 2talk cost ~$10 per month
2) Enable simultaneous ring, with the landline phone number enabled after 3 seconds.
3) Connect an old telecom Caller ID unit to the voip ATA

When a call comes in, the caller ID unit will display the CLID from the voip ATA, but if you pick up on the landline you can handle the call without needing to transport the audio over voip.

My parents do this - in a roundabout way.
The PABX in their house doesnt forward the trunk incoming CLID through to extensions. So they have one of the old telecom units wired up to the trunk line before it goes into the pabx. It sits in the lounge where they can easily see it before picking up the phone.

The cost of the forwarded calls from the 2talk line to the landline are pretty much free - I think they have a fair usage policy of 2000 minutes a month which is alot of incoming calls.

I have checked the OP's address and looks like they are 4-5km from the cabinet - thus the low sync speeds. However the good news is cabinet appears to be a RBI upgraded cabinet, so should not be suffering from congestion. I.E. although "low" sync speed, it should be consistent for VoIP.
Things that will help:
- master filter install to get the most out of the connection; maybe a bit more sync speed + reduced errors & variation
- ideally go with the same provider for VoIP + Broadband for better QoS; e.g. WorldxChange.
- recommend interleaving on
- may also require a more "robust" xDSL profile

richms: Ages back when I got a phone on at home I was connected to the 483xxxx birkdale exchange, which is old and crap. I then called to get caller ID an was told I couldnt have it. Weird. Neighbours have it.

Anyway, they could move me to the other exchange in the same building but I would have to get a new phone number. 482xxxx one was good to go for caller ID. It was all telecoms fault at the time, and their not replacing 25+ year old technology because they like holding onto museum pieces.

Best option is to go with an unbundled telco if there are any in your exchange. Its hard to find exactly who is in what exchange without asking them, but try call plus and see if they have anything in there.

IMO a landine without caller ID is pretty useless since you cant block anonymous calls on your phone. Would be a non issue if spark would do it on their side but they wont.

Lol.. we're not in China where you'd probably get hundreds of anonymous calls asking for sales, and spam etc...

Just thinking about it, I haven't had many anonymous calls over the year in 2014!
