sbiddle: If you're seeing increased latency and reduced download speeds it's also worth checking you're not saturating your upstream. This is becoming an exceptionally common problem.

RyanM: I guess a video chat could saturate the upstream, but sometimes I get premier league pass or other live events buffering every few seconds with minimal traffic going up.
I'm actually moving a couple of km's away so I'm hopeful that local issues will be resolved. I just want to make sure that I am choosing the right provider before I sign a contract. Looks like I'm staying with SPARK and getting a master filter.
Unfortunately no WISPS around me, although I'm tempted to talk to a neighbour in my new property that has vodafone cable on their street (unfortunately I'm too far away by 50 metres or so) about getting it installed and running a point to point line of sight connection between the properties. Last resort of course.
PS this is in Karori Wellington, my previous house only had my terrible ADSL the new house's cabinet has VDSL but the new house is too far away (despite Spark assuring me I could get VDSL before I bought it)
Thanks for the advice, it's been interesting and informative.
