Yep, it's unlikely I'd get $45k together. Not even going to try. Tapping into that UFB sometime would be nice though.

Anyone know how many meters down the road the UFB would reach from the exchange? Wondering how many neighbors this box would benefit.

koyukon: So it looks like it's either get the community to get $45k together, or talk with my neighbours to get 4 or 5 figures together for fibre. Then snap can 'maybe' make it happen.

A communal upgrade wouldn't be the worst expense - there is already fibre terminated in the UAX, so it should be possible to replace the ASAM with a VDSL2+ capable set and have ADSL2+ for everyone around there.

Don't know how much it'll cost though, you'd need to talk to Chorus and get a quote from them directly. Definitely do-able, and certainly I think the Ohaupo community might pull together to make it happen, but I wouldn't be too hopeful.

thing is 80-90% of people dont care that much about their broadband. its only the geeks gamers and downloaders that care and they dont make up much of a community

yep if more people cared then we would see more community projects but the state of things at the moment is most people get by with ASDL or ADSL2+

They wont be upgrading your exchange but i do see fibre running all through there.

If the cabinet has fibre running past/to it. Upgrade to ADSL2/ VDSL approx 40-50k. In terms of has any community managed to fund this, a small town on the west coast managed it. Chorus GL can chime in and tell you more about it. Good on them.
I tried locally, retired farmers mostly and majority of them were not interested. I goto 15k between a few of us, gave up after sending news letters setting up a facebook page etc. We may get lucky if the money pledged by National to upgrade some of the rural cabinets comes through. Hopefully I haven't nulled our chances by complaining hassling them in the past!

Wireless is the nest best option, although a lot of people dont like this..... LAG!!!!!!!!!!!!!! is the screams you will hear from the kids gaming!!!!

Can not remember of the top of my head, but I think there were about 40 homes and they all chipped in 1k each from what GL from Chorus was saying. They had a cafe at the heart of their village that got vdsl and was offering free wifi to travelers etc. I think it made a real difference to their village in that travelers would stop and spend some coin etc.

The village that approached Chorus most recently to upgrade their local broadband cabinet from ADSL1 to VDSL was Okarito.

The local community saw the need for better broadband in order that they could attract new residents and to better serve tourists.

The community got together and found that there were multiple reasons why they needed better broadband - not just so that teenagers could watch YouTube.

It took a while for them to get the entire community across the line, and it took a determined effort on the part of a few committed volunteers to get the funding secured.

If other communities are ready to do something similar just drop me a line.
