nakedmolerat: I was just thinking what if you just put a small cabinet/rack of some sort since you actually like it there?

I must say it looks very tidy there. I personally like it behind the curtain.

Oh it is very tidy but as I said before I don't want to risk having the house burn down.

I also have the other problem that my small rack really wouldn't fit behind the curtain.

I had a phone call and a visit from a Downers rep yesterday.

He talked to the Chorus QA team before arriving and it seems that after the QA guy returned to the office he decided it wasn't a fire hazard after all but for some reason nobody told me.

I've asked to be told what changed his mind just so I have some comfort that he is right now and was wrong before.

The temperature of the ONT yesterday got to about 42 degrees C.  I don't know what the spec is for these boxes but I can't imagine that 42 degrees would be a problem.

I will keep an eye on the temperature over the next few hot days and just make sure it doesn't get much higher.  My router will be relocated upstairs so that the ONT is the only heat source behind the curtain.

Thanks to those on Geekzone who helped get this sorted.

I suggest you get an assurance from Chorus/Downer in writing that this is not a fire hazard.

Send a copy to your insurance company, asking them to respond if they disagree.

I do not believe that is necessary.

I doubt the insurance company would respond with anything other than "we are unable to agree or disagree".

Today I had a call from the Chorus QA guy, the problem curtains are those with a sound proof backing.  I suspect they just smother the device and give it no ventilation.

He said the biggest problems they had with ONTs was dust.  I won't tell the wife this or she'll expect me to vacuum more often. :)

Well at least get it from Chorus in writing.  That way if you do have an issue you (or your insurer) can sue them.

According to http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=49&topicid=166001 40deg is the max ambient temp. So the ONT is getting too hot. Even if they say it is not going to catch fire. What will happen in a year or 2 when the ONT dies due to running hot for so long? Will they blame you for putting the curtains there? Even though the curtains were there first.

Also move your Edge router so it sits beside the ONT instead of above it. As my Edge router gets reasonably warm. Even though it is about 1.5m away from the ONT. Still good to see more people on GZ using the Edge router.
