No, but I have his cell...

I have logged with my ISP and they are getting Chorus out again. Will be interesting to see if it is the same guy

DarthKermit: How does one become a Chorus tech in the first place?

It will vary across the 3 service providers but the only 2 ways really are:

1. You are already qualified i.e. have a qual and previously worked on the NZ network before or an overseas network
2. Do a 2/3 year apprenticeship with one of the companies

chevrolux: I don't really have a problem with twisting pairs together when there are 4 or more wires to join - easier foe the next person to look at as opposed to a whole bunch of 3-ports. But the joint needs to be insulated with a little bit of dry heatshrink. Also for the Chorus tech to remove a splitter when the complaint is dsl dropping out is just a plain stupid move -I can say this because I used to work on the Chorus network.

Call your ISP immediately and ask them to get Chorus to re-attend and rectify the wiring as well as reinstalling the splitter. Tbat many stubs off your wiring is going to degrade your DSL significantly. Clearly this fault man either a) didn't know what what he was doing or b) was just being flat out lazy because he gets paid per job. I suspect b.

Im no expert, but arent those gel connectors meant to be used to prevent corrosion?

It all depends on the situation. You wouldn't do a twist joint in an external box because of the moisture. But when inside, in a dry situation like a wall box or ceiling space, a twist joint will last for many years if done properly. In this instance the cables look to be under some strain which would concern me a bit.

Surely the best way to join alot of conductors at 1 point. Or conductors that won't fit into gel connectors. Is to just solder them.

Back when I was 16 I signed up to my own Jetstart ADSL connection as I was sick of having to argue with my sisters over who can use the phone line for dial up. I took the single supplied plug in filter and spliced it into the phone line where it came into the house. And then ran some old 2 pair cable to my room. Soldering all the joins. As I didn't want to pay $20 or so each to buy enough plug in filters for all 7 jackpoints in the house. Yeeeeeeeeeeeeees, My own internet connection that is more than twice as fast as dialup. (128Kbit) And without my sisters disconnecting me every 5 min. That $65 per month was so worth it.

Nowdays I laugh that I had installed my own master filter without realising it. And that conklin's and 2G EDGE cellular data both give faster speeds.

If I could do it back then, There is almost no excuse to not have a master filter on a xDSL connection today.

How do you know it's better in there? Did they reinstate the master filter?

No master filter, but based on the wires on the ground and the "tidy" condition now, they cut out a lot of the mess. It is much simpler now, although all that has been done is to tidy up the connections from twisted wires to proper gel connectors, then covering it all up.

I am OK with this for now as I will go with fibre when it arrives in six months or so. Until then as long as the line is stable - i.e. not crackling or dropping, I am all good.
