Hi all.

Had a problem with my phone dropping out. The chorus faults guy came by and repaired it. He took out the master filter and asked me to add filters to each phone, which I did. All was good, although my adsl dropped from 9mbit to 8mbit. Not a big deal...

When I looked under the house, he had cut off connectors and just twisted the wires together! I thought this was weird and took a photo (attached), and lo and behold our phones are now crackling and we have dropouts on ADSL.

Anyone else seen this sort of wiring???

call whoever you called in the first place to get the work done and stress that they have done an extremely poor job and they need to come back and fix it

So instead of replacing the master filter, he outright removed it? did he atlest ask if you were fine with this happening?

That wiring is shocking to say the least, Ild call your isp and request that it is done properly (including the picture in an email if possible)

Ild personally be requesting that that master filter is put back in as there shouldnt really be a reason for removing it in the first place!

I would be composing a email to who ever you asked to come and check it out (you phone company??) attach the picture and tell them to fix it correctly, that kind of work is nothing short of shoddy and the chorus tech who done that should be shot!

Sadly as an ex alarm installer I have seen much worse.

I have come into some interesting wiring efforts in a house when installing an alarm (or even just fixing some other idiots botch up).
On most occasions I have arrived to find the plug in ADSL filters scattered around the house, and by the time I have finished there are;

1. no plug in filters
2. a working alarm system
3. a master filter installed
4. better broadband signals
5. a decent call quality.

I have found muppets that have installed plug in filters in alarm systems and they don't employ the land line cut out feature of the alarm.
(this means that if there is an activation of the alarm and someone leaves the phone off the hook, the alarm can't dial)

I spent 4 hours one day tracing and rewiring a person's house phone wiring just so they could get my 5 point list working right - don't tell my old employers.

I remember one place I was there when a Chorus tech was there as well fixing the clients phone connection and get ADSL working, he was trying to hand them the plug in filters.
I told him not to bother as I was installing a master filter, he gave me a blank stare, I showed him the filter, he still looked confused.
I left that place after 5 that night with a completely rewired phone system and reprogrammed alarm system and a very happy customer.

I have pride in my work, not everyone does unfortunately.

I don't really have a problem with twisting pairs together when there are 4 or more wires to join - easier foe the next person to look at as opposed to a whole bunch of 3-ports. But the joint needs to be insulated with a little bit of dry heatshrink. Also for the Chorus tech to remove a splitter when the complaint is dsl dropping out is just a plain stupid move -I can say this because I used to work on the Chorus network.

Call your ISP immediately and ask them to get Chorus to re-attend and rectify the wiring as well as reinstalling the splitter. Tbat many stubs off your wiring is going to degrade your DSL significantly. Clearly this fault man either a) didn't know what what he was doing or b) was just being flat out lazy because he gets paid per job. I suspect b.

Im no expert, but arent those gel connectors meant to be used to prevent corrosion?

OK without going into to much detail your job has been done by Vision Stream one of the 3 service partners. AFAIK they get paid per job as oppose to a salary so yes this was a dodgy to get to the next job. The other 2 service partners are not employed under this owner operator model and are paid salary/hourly regardless so would probably have done a better job.

As others have said get them back to sort this out. You'll probably have to go via Chorus / Your ISP though.

Did the tech leave a card?

I have logged with my ISP and they are getting Chorus out again. Will be interesting to see if it is the same guy
