hi  i am on NO 8 wireless (lightwire) 1Mb/s max speed) at the moment(near Gordonton 10m north of Hamilton ) on  there 200gb plan for $105 seems reasonable unfortunately being fast has its downsides as well as my kids have been ripping threw the data , i cant really be bothered any more  going around telling the family of stop using the data . ive had to resort back to my horrible dsl connection speeds around max at 430kb/s  and next to nothing speeds from 3pm to 10pm each day.

i ve asked no 8 for more data since the kids want to put on netflix but no 8 has said we not likey to increase data packs let alone unlimited plans  it in the near future or even go to 4G.

i have really got no more options either pay hundreds on a 4g connection which i can get on my note 4 or wait for the exchange to upgraded. rumours from chorus they got no plans for upgrade since they cant justify cost(50g+) for over 2000 people

where does that leave me?

The rural problem isn't going away any time soon.

You live rurally yet expect the same services at the same price as urban dwellers. It's just unrealistic.

When DSL is good up to two km and in rural areas that could be the distance from the road to the house. And when trenching in fibre is around $10k per km. The costs very quickly count up.

The only real option in rural areas is wireless of some description.

So my suggestion is to ring the groups like lightwire et al. They are the experts in this area. They will tell you what is technically available for your budget. You may not like what you hear but at least they will be honest.

I would also explore asking other providers, as Chorus's map very clearly states that address can get VDSL.

I think the reason why Chorus "can't be bothered" is that the government and commerce commission have sent a very clear message that the price Chorus can sell Broadband is going in one direction and that is down. Either by a little... or by a lot.
When you have factored in the UFB build based on returns you get from copper. Plus investors like a dividend on their investment. And all rural areas have customer counts sub 50. Trenching out new fibre for a service that is already costing you money and is only going to be less profitable.
To me it's not a surprise at all. And the 100million the government pitched in as part of the last election. Is chicken feed for the 800+ conklins abd ASAMs out there.
I heard there were guessitmations of 1.5bil to upgrade and replace the rest of the legacy network.

Yea, my comment was in regards to @quickymart who mentioned VDSL at some address, just wondering what address he means as I know it wasn't yours or the OP.

So the vodafone RBI towers are being set up and various providers like Ultimate Wireless (good guys) are reselling the vodafone service.

But as a condition of vodafone getting the grant to build the towers, they need to make them so others can co-locate on them.
Light wire has been the only one I have heard of so far that I have heard take up the offer - other than spark/2d cellular.

So Lightwire (also good guys to deal with) can put up their own antennas, running on different frequencies, at different speeds, with different backhaul to town on the vodafone towers.
I would say that vodafone would have a better chance at getting through a tree than lightwire would from the same tower.

At the same time, lightwire can set up towers that have no relation to vodafone. These other towers can be in a different direction from your house and therefore bypass problematic tree.

Different antennas, radio protocols and frequencies have different capabilities when getting through trees or tough terrain.
