If you've got a phone line then providers like Spark or Snap shouldn't have any issues with connecting you up to a broadband service. As others have stated you're better to go with either xDSL or a wireless solution (Lightwire spring to mind) over Farmside.

Wireless Nation totally own Farmside IMO for Satellite connections.

their must be some piece of the puzzle missing if the ISP's are saying you cant get a xdsl service when you have a phoneline and are in the area for service

Someone who works for an ISP or who can diagnose the problem/check our property in Karapiro please PM me because my parents and myself don't know what we should do to sort this out.

I suspect that somewhere along the way to your parents place, an old radio repeater was put in to avoid the need to lay a long copper line down.

Good enough for voice only, but forget about broadband.

Still, Chorus or your ISP should confirm

I'd go with RBI Wireless over Satellite: http://www.ultimatebroadband.co.nz/rbi-wireless.html I can check if this will work for you.
Has there ever been a physical phone line on?
Feel free to PM me some details and I can check a few things on the fixed line side too.

Keen to know what happened here.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Fraser (coffeebaron) sorted us out with unlimited adsl via WxC :-). Unsure why other ISPs were telling us it wasn't possible. Maybe Fraser can shed some light?

Finally got customer connected on ADSL. No one could give us a clear answer, but after a bit of back n forth between WxC & Chorus, order was placed and connected no problem.

Must have been one of those odd addresses. Previously I believe house ever only had Farmside Satellite.

Curious as to what the DSL stats are like. Because I was in the same situation years ago in Maungatapere when signing up with Vodafone for ADSL.

They didn't even know if the house existed. Turns out the wires were cut and they just needed hooking back up inside + jack fit.
