I'm living with my parents who have just relocated to a rural property.
They have been told [over the phone] that they're unable to receive adsl broadband because of the terrain of their land.
Our neighbours who live further from the exchange have no problems receiving adsl.

Is there absolutely nothing they can do? Are they going to have to go for satellite broadband?
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Do you have mobile phone coverage at home?

For vodafone, no. Just outside our property we do. We do receive a weak signal from the Spark network.

By weak, I mean there's a one bar signal in some areas of the house. Sometimes no signal.

According to Chorus's map, you can get either ADSL or VDSL(?) at that address.

Yep, I have checked that. But according to vodafone still can't because of our land. Our house is up a hilly driveway

does the house have a phone line? does it work?

if so you should be able to get ADSL or VDSL (depends on a few things)

you are in a fixed line area and should be able to get either standard xdsl service or a rbi equivalent

check with another couple of ISP's as you may have been given the wrong info from vodafone

We have a working phone line. We are just outside the rbi zone unfortunately, so that is not an option. We barely get any mobile coverage. Yep will have to give that a go.

the chorus, Vodafone, spark address checkers all say its available at your place going off that address you supplied (before it was removed)

there must be something else going on there

i would call a couple of other ISP's and see what they say as well

I have friends that are in the same situation, in areas without very good mobile coverage. You could still be able to get a good mobile broadband connection via an external directional antenna. Something like these: http://www.3grouterstore.co.uk/3G/4G_Antennas.html

The directional antenna supplied for wireless RBI can do a lot with 1 bar of signal.
There's an installer on here - coffeebaron - who might be able to check it out for you.

We went with Ultimate Broadband's wireless RBI DIY install option.
For a signal meter we used the supplied antenna, cable and modem (on extension cords) and an ipad.

Walked around the place (as far as 2 extension cords would let us) climbed on the roof, up ladders and trees..

And found a sweet spot, 6m above our roof where we got good signal. Used guyed galvanised pipe as a tower.

Broadband!

Looks like xDSL should be available there, the cabinet is just down the road. If you need help dealing with an ISP on this, I can help out. I can also do the wiring as I cover the Waikato area.

Update: Gave Telecom a call, and they're saying that we don't have copper wire (?) so unable to receive BB. We are probably going to go for Farmside satellite.
