Benek: Back to my original question: Are there any ISP's who stand out as outperforming others specifically on Whangaparaoa? Does the local network in that area have much to do with it or will any ISP who covers the region offer the same thing?

Local network will be Chorus unless you get connected to an unbundled exchange,

Then it's back to core network (not area related) then peering and many other things,

The question you are asking is not a simple answer due to some many factors

you won't get stats on actual performance at that level, but check out trunet for reporting on the ISPs who sell VDSL and how they compare for things like webpage download times and peak time congestion.

as for master filter, yes if you go for VDSL you should probably get one, but check whether the property already has one (if current tenants have VDSL already, then they probably have one)
You really don't want to end up paying for a new one that you don't actually need it (it costs the ISPs ~$300 to put one in, which is money they therefore pass onto you through their monthly pricing)

you can get one installed yourself by coffeebaron (on geekzone) for ~$150 (and he will do a much more consistently better job than chorus are likely to do)

An isp is an isp really

if you don't call the help desk they are bascially all the same.

how far are you from the cabinet/exchange

Chorus is Chorus, and the last mile doesn't vary between ISPs - but I couldn't disagree more with more statement.

There is huge variations in the performance of ISPs. They all have to buy their own backhaul, bandwidth andconnectivity. They choose their own oversubscription rates. amd have different profiles of customers. And lastly, fighting all of this, they are a business and want to return a profit.

Just spoke with a guy at work who lives in Manly, hes on VDSL getting about the same as me, 40/10. Think hes with Orcon.

The exchange is at 720 Whangaparaoa Road. There is a big pocket of Manly not cabenitised, I know, I'm in one of those pockets. So I go back to the exchange, I get maxed out at about 9 Mbps. I'm with Chorus now, used to be with Orcon, they have their own gear in the exchange. I think Slingshot might too, not sure, but I guess they can use the Orcon LLU, I dunno.

that info is only really useful if the OP happens to be moving into the same property as your contact.

VDSL speed depends on distance from the exchange and home wiring, and virtually nothing to do with choice of ISP.

close enough for VDSL (assuming the copper does go in a pretty straight line, which isn't always the case)

Basically, you won't know for sure until you actually get hooked up.

Depending which direction you go you might be in one of the few fibre areas up that way.

On Polkinghorne Drive (big manly area). No fibre there yet. The fibre is mostly around the shopping/commercial area right?

Stick your address in here https://www.chorus.co.nz/network-upgrade-map and you can see the UFB and xDSL layers. Broadband >20Mb/s means VDSL area, >10MB/s means ADSL area.

Yep looks like it's just in the >20 area, thankfully.

Fibre is planned "after july 16" :(

750m is getting up there for distance for VDSL, you might be in the low 30's or even in the 20's at that distance, and you upload might start to suffer
